Heat Control Lever Not Working

The passenger side heat control lever(between seats) has quit working. The rear blower does not kick in and cold air blows into cabin on RHS. The heat exchange flapper is operating properly ie opens and closes with lever.

The driver side continues to work fine ie blower kicks in and warm air into drivers side.

Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Are you sure it is oppening and closing? If it is in fact working, meaning not just the lever goes up and down but the cable is actually openning and closing, then your heater hose from the exchanger to the control box is either disconnected, split or missing.

I physically checked the flapper action and it is opening and closing properly. Hoses are in place as well. Why would the blower motor not come on? It does operate when driver lever is raised.

So, when you pull the driver's side lever, the rear blower kicks in, but when you pull the passenger side one it doesn't?

Can you get passenger side heat when BOTH are pulled up?

If yes and yes, then the microswitch on the passenger side lever must be bad (or the wiring associated with it). I think they each have individual switches.

If yes and no, then you must have a clog somewhere within the passenger side ductwork, or a big hole.

If no and no, then your blower or associated wiring is bad.

Even without the blower you should get alot of heat out of that box with simple gravity, or rather thermal air flow alone, IF it's the bix is openning, clogged, torn or mr disconnected hose. The fan only assists air flow it does not create it. My car fills with heat without even putting the fan on as you have in the SC models.

Yes, I realize the heater fan only acts as an auxillary and I should get some heat from motor fan. What is strange though is that the system worked fine until one day blower would not come on and cold air would blow into cabin(passenger side) with passenger lever raised. Coincidence??? Again drivers side works fine-lever up, fan kicks in, warm air.

Perhaps time to crawl back under car and have a closer look at ducting. Thanks for suggestions.

the 87 has footwell blowers in addition to the blower in the engine compartment. Check the fuse on the right side blower motor, check the motor too.

The footwell blowers have never worked. I recently checked the RHS. It is seized and fuse is burnt. I think I just realized why I"m getting cold air-I removed the blower motor when I checked it and thus interrupted the duct work. Duh..... However why is the blower not coming on-it always worked even though footwell blower hasn"t worked for 8 years??

Thanks again. I think I"m beginning to feel foolish!

All is well. Replaced seized footwell blower and rear heater works now. Should have thought of this before posting. Thanks for your input.

Glad to hear you you figured it out, I knew there had to be an interuption somewhere along that heat line.
