Oil Change Blues
Does anyone have any secerts on how to remove the oil fliter without spilling the used oil on the body rail/ I have tried rags and paper towels, but i stll have a mess to clean up. any ideas/

I just did mine last week and removed the filter after draining the rest of the oil. I jacked the car slightly up on the right side after everything drained to have gravity work with me and didn't spill a drop but was ready with the paper towel anyway.

Tip the car on it's side?
 No, it always makes a little mess for me. I pack paper towels around the filter before I remove it. Keep the mess to a minimum. If there are any good idea, I'd like to hear them too.

Making certain that the filter spins off at a fairly quick speed helps to keep the oil on the filter. It runs around the filter but can't reach the bottom if you do it right.
(You are still going to drip some though...)

I always tuck an old towel below the filter area and that catches any oil that spills or drips out. works for me...

Tuck a towel around the filter and work fast has been my "trick". I have had good luck with this method although a few drips always seem to slip by. No big deal. Get some Simple Green or other cleaner and wipe them up.

I used to wash the towel (alone) but it made such a mess in the washing machine that now I use the towel for all of my cleanup work in the garage, then throw it away when I'm done for the day. My wife is much happier with this arrangement!

I've taken to old phonebooks for rags. We get several each year for our offices as well as the house.

I've been told you can punch a hole in the top of the filter and let it drain before taking it off. Just before removal I throw a piece of duct tape on the hole. The hole is suppose to help it to drain but I can't say that I see a major difference.
