I'm not that impressed with his website with the pop up ads, hope his work is better than that

I've been in the Type IV world for a while and would recommend you check out:
Klaus Kaefertuning

He knows what he's doing and has a very effective cooling shroud developed for the Type IV engine. It's 911 based but optimised unlike most shrouds you will find. (Jake's DTM should work well too, but does not look like that picture with the 911 cooling fan). Klaus builds Type IV engines that should be able to compete with Jake.

I'm still involved in a Type IV project (not as active as we would like, life got in the way) to develop Type IV heads with 3 valves designed by Ludwig Apfelbeck. (see apfelbeck.nl) That's how I got interested in and learned about all the Type IV guru's. Germany has a few of them as well. Klaus sure is one of them and you probbably know Remmele as well .

I just came across this site:

rollyourcar.com

Some of you expressed interest in "rolling" your cars. This is a good resource.

p.s. looking forward to updates!

well they kinda fit

When putting the steering column back together I managed to lose most of the original bearings (in hindsight I should have left it as it was and painted around it!). However I managed to get hold of a replacement needle bearing, and at a fraction of the cost of a complete new unit. Really straight forward to install and has a nice smooth action. Maybe an option for anyone who needs to replace the upper bearing of their steering column.....

Thanks
Chris

Hi Jury, that's an epic journey, you could submit that project to Discovery Channel. I have also moved over to Germany, the darker side, Leipzig! I have my UK car here a 3.2 targa. Has a bit of cancer that has made it difficult to sell, I really want a coupe to make into a track/road rally, but as I can't shift the targa for a reasonable price (especially after sinking a heap of cash into it last summer) I am looking at all options. My first thought is to cut a roof from a donor car and weld it onto the targa's existing body work mounts. If anyone here has any input please check my new thread entitled "weld a roof to replace a targa top???"I know, I am a lunatic!

And Jury, i hope you will get the car out on the Nurburgring one day, please let me know, I could happily make the trip to watch that!

Inspired by Classic Lemans weekend I want to get cracking again and make some progress. Over the last few months I have a collection of parts which need to be fitted...

New brake discs with and calipers all round. The front discs have been grooved and dimpled, I don't know if this is a good idea but they look pretty good (the rears have already been fitted in order to hold the handbrake)

Re-conditioned pedal box, along with accelarator pedal and master cylinder

The plan was to put Felt on the roof lining, dash, parcel shelf and backside of doors. I decided to go to a music centre and try and get the stuff used to cover speaker boxes......15 euro square metre!! So I was in the DIY store picking up some allen bolts and walked past the flooring section. I picked up some CHEAP carpet with a really small rib. It is exactly the colour I was after, kinda anthracite with white fleks and at 9 euros for 4m x 2m it was a bargin, just need to peel off the backer (can easily do it by hand which is testament to the low flooring quality ) before glueing down.

Through the bonnet filler parts, just need to finalise the bonnet position before cutting and tack welding the filler pipe in place

I contemplated another Nardi wheel but went with the standard issue Prototipo, feels good.

Had a thought on the horn boss, I plan to have the horn push button routed onto the dash. I had a spare 3 prong Fuch centre cap and with abit of gentle prong bending it looks pretty cool in place. Just need to decide to leave it in raw finished or spray it up (body colour, orange, RAF roundel etc?)

Whilst on the subject of steering wheels has anyone come across this issue. The boss for the Prototipo has a very rough finish where the sits in the steering shaft bearing. I have rubbed it slightly with some wet and dry but obviously I don't want to polish it for fear of reducing the overall diametre. In comparison the original steering wheel is very polished and smooth in the same area.

Hope to get all this fitted over the next week, and then fingers crossed update with news of a 2.2 911 motor install!

Cheers
Chris

Headlining installed, fingers still stuck together!....

Made rough paper pattern...

Cut out carpet and rubbed off backer by hand, wearing a gardening glove, came off really easy

Good covering of contact adhesive and gentle prodding with a lolly pop stick, and it is in place. Really like the colour.

In hindsight it would have been easier to remove the rollbar, but at the same time it became a handy third hand supporting the carpet mid-way through the glueing process. Started fitting the door panels also, but ran out of glue, will try and finish them tomorrow.

are you putting carpet on the doors, like RS panels with carpet? I had thought about doing this a while back and had several people tell me it was a bad idea from a wear standpoint. Interested to see how yours turns out. Car is going to be awesome!

Carpet on the doors is on the inside of the panel, I cut away the inner panel as I am going to use leather pull straps for the windows so don't need all the mounting points for the window winder etc...

The carpet is purely for looks and I guess abit of sound deadening I have made some panels with matching cutouts which I am going to cover in 'leather' (ok......actually vinyl), hopefully tomorrow.

Cheers

Those hollow doors aren't terrible safe in terms of side impact without a door bar / cage. Are you switching to a cage down the line?

Where exactly did you find the bearing?

Not planned on a full cage, but I have thought about extending the rollbar to make door bars...might not be a bad idea

...carpet fitted to the inside of the door panels (against the outer skin), finishes it nicer and gives abit of sound deadening. The door cards are mocked up ready to be covered in old english vinyl. I was just going to cover the hardboard but thinking it may be better to use some acrylic sheet.

Final fitting of the fibreglass (wings, bonnet, bumpers, engine lid) is under way. I was going to order original rubber seals but thought that the chances of them fitting correctly was fairly minimal. So I got some single sided P.U foam, in 13mm and 6mm thickness....

First step is to mark where to place the tape, the new waxed finish on the paint wouldn't let masking tape stick. So with the bumper in place I simple used a heavy lead pencil (6B) to mark the position, then remove the bumper and applied the foam tape whilst slightly stretching it to follow the curves...

I did fit an original rubber bonnet seal but the fit was nowhere near, the bonnet sat really high. I am guessing this was a combination of the thicker fibreglass bonnet and also the weight difference vs the original steel. So used the 13mm foam tape and it fits really well...just needs some tweaking of the wing bolts to compress the tape in place...

Love allen bolts.....used nylon washers against all fibreglass parts

I really like the leather bonnet straps but had a feeling that I may need some extra closure. I got hold of a nice re-conditioned latch system, only problem was I didn't realise the bonnet didn't have a recess to accomodate the adjusting pin on the backside...thankfully the drilling wasn't too painful, even through the 4mm steel reinforcement plate!!...

The first fit is good. The leather straps will pull the bonnet down abit more when fully tight, put pretty happy with it as it is...

Thanks
Chris
