I'm sitting here eating my bowl of salad like a bowl of popcorn at the movies....cool project you've got going there.

Nice project. You are a very ambitious man - I admire that about you guys(cnielsen and speedo too) and the fact that you take the time to share with the rest of us. I like the valve stem orange detail, nice. I have been thinking of doing something similiar on my lightweight. Thanks for the inspiration. Love the touring look too with the wheel on the roof.

You're a true old-world craftsman. Keep it coming!

Chris..very interested in the prep of your flat six. Interested in the removal of the 912 motor mounts and installation of the 911 motor mounts. Are you installing new MM's or cut-outs ? Great job so far ;)
|
I still have the 912 motor mounts in place...basically I am still undecided on the motor spec, came close to picking up a 911T motor that had potential to build on but currently thinking about keeping it a 4 banger for something different....maybe even a Jake Raby Type 4???
Check out Speedo's build, he shows removing the 912 MM's and installing the 911 MM's http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/345183-swb-911r-beginning-2.html Chris |
Hey that is an incredible job you did on that car! I am impressed. I would like PM you about how you constructed the RSR single windshield wiper. Keep up the amazing work.
AKporsche |
Amazing work Chris! Keep up the good work...
|
I'll second the request for the single wiper arm write up
|
Very Nice! I vote that you keep the 4 banger. You will be very happy with the overall balance of the car and you won't be like everyone else...which you have evidenced...that you are not.

wow...subscribed.great work!!!

Right then time to get started again... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836226.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836287.jpg I knew that the fibreglass needed abit of tweaking to fit but to be blunt its been a right pain in the rear! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836350.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836402.jpg Starting at the back I bolted the rear bumper up to the underside of the light housing and fabricated some new brackets The rear brackets aren't the prettiest or the cleanest fibreglass work, but the end result is hidden and solid which is the most important bit... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836502.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836542.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836591.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836640.jpg |
For some reason the front bumper sat about 3 inches too wide on each side, so after alot of head scatching the only option was a cut and shut job! I cut a section out of the middle, braced and then fibreglassed over the backside of the join...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836745.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836792.jpg The panel gaps are all over the place, especially where front wing meets door. Alot of this project has been trial and error, and sorting this area is no exception. I built up with fibreglass on the topside and marked the gap then built up on the backside. the brace bar on the back was way off so I decided to cut it off and then fabricate some brackets to attach onto the chassis, its solid and kinda looks lightweight! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836837.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836869.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836909.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836944.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247836981.jpg |
Got some nice H4's sent from a friend in the states, and they fit surprisingly well. Made up some small brackets which are pinned in place and will be glassed over later. Picked up some small indicators which are smaller than the 'R' units but I am happy with the look, its starting to get a face
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837065.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837102.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837130.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837161.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837190.jpg |
Lightweight door cards mocked up, maybe getting abit ahead of myself but made a nice change from fibreglass dust...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837260.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837301.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837339.jpg Rear decklid fitted with flip over style hinges , I was going to make them but ended up buying them instead. They are a lovely bit of work.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837420.jpg Next big job is to sort out the petrol tank and the idea is to have a centre fill cap. I have an early tank, but the later style fits ok and has the larger/flatter top surface which will be better to but the larger centre pipe in. Need to do some measuring and re-measuring and measuring again...Next step is to plug the welder in, I had to leave my trusty Lincoln behind in the US and haven't fired up the new one yet. Had some electrical problems with the house but maybe this weekend I'll give it a go.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247837465.jpg All in all I'm feeling good about the car again, hope to update again soon..... |
Hi Chris,
Glad to see the lights arrived and they do look very good on. Very nice work on the car so far. David |
Looking great! Man I envy those with bodywork skillz..
|
Fibreglass fitting finished just need to fill afew holes...looking good in the daylight but probably need to adjust the ride height alittle:)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250190390.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250190524.jpg Bracing bars to support the wings are maybe abit over worked but look kinda trick... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250190653.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250190737.jpg Any thoughts on the mirror? I like the idea, and it will be body coloured but maybe its abit too "Fast and furious" http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250190850.jpg Decklid 'grill' mocked up, plan is to do this in clear acrylic... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250190951.jpg Going to try and start painting the interior this weekend... Hi Chris,

If I had the skill to attack that, I wouldn't be a sales manager. Just can't imagine the courage it takes to dive into a total tub rebuild. That's amazing.

Subscribed! i cant miss out on this action!!

Awesomeness!!

Can you spare some motivation?... (I've had the flue for about 3 weeks)
Great build. Thanks for sharing. |
YEAH brother, INCREDIBLE work. really inspiring. subscribed.
now for my worthless opinions.. 1. Make it a flat six. you already have a sweet 4banger in the driveway. I'm sure you'll have more fun in the true 906/911R spirit. 2. Lose the mirror. just my opinion. the car is so well put together and VERY tasteful, I think you should top it off with all the right (period) details. Talbot or a proper durant. 3. color is going to be a whole other debate, but IMO it should definately 100% be non-metallic. Slate grey would be my choice. 4. You're amazing keep up that stunning work! |
OH yeah! and thank you so much for photographing and documenting! really inspiring!

1. I hear ya. Still thinking about engine specs, the only thing hold me back from a screaming flat 6 is the $ :) 2. Yeah gone off the idea, Durant is ordered on on its way. 3. The colour is going to be non-metalic, afew shades lighter than slate grey, have a look at the fuchs'. Wheels and body are going to be the same colour. 4 Thanks;) Chris |
I am really, really enjoying this tread..... tons of work but it looks like its paying off.
I have similar plans for my 72, I was going to go RSR but narrow body just looks so right. |
Made up some bonnet tie downs. I had got some rubber 'RS' style hooks but can't get the mounting plate to fit correctly. So went down to the local "everything under one roof shop" and picked up some leather gents belts and made up some leather strap tie downs. Think it gives a nice alternative look, normally seen on 356 outlaws...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250544594.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250544640.jpg I know that one of the 911r prototypes had leather straps between bonnet and wings. I thought of trying this but on my car the combination of fibreglass hood, wings and drilled out hinges has resulted in a slight twisting of the bonnet. So I have fitted the straps over the bumper, this will straighten the bonnet out once properly attached (only double sided tape at the moment), and in my humble opinion looks better balanced... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250544684.jpg Rear strap needs some tweaking but should be sorted with the use of a luggage strap hook to guide the strap...just a shame that the license plate gets in the way:rolleyes: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250544743.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1250544769.jpg Thanks Chris |
those look INSANE! WOW. perfect perfect perfect.
