Please title your threads appropriately

I'd like to propose that everyone make better effort to title your new threads in a way that makes searching easier and quicker.

I, for one, get a little irritated whenever I do a search over a subject, only to get pages of results consisting of "Need some help", "What is this?", "Hey Guys!", and "You won't believe this".

If we all agree to encourage searching before posting new topics, then let us each do our part to make these searches more efficient.

Better thread titles would be something like:

"Looking for torsion bar suggestions for 79 SC track car"

"How to replace the sunroof felt seals?"

"What's the best spark plugs for an 88 Carrera"

With the archive growing by leaps and bounds each day, searches are getting harder and harder to find what you're looking for in a reasonable time.

+1, it would be more helpfull on searches and we don't have to keep telling newbies or us oldies to do a search.

As avid porsche enthusiast's we are, it is difficult at times to worry about the appropriate way to title our threads, in the heat of the moment please excuse our errors and enjoy the forum for what it is, "a forum" please don't take this the wrong way but enjoy it for what it really is meant to be. A learning experience for all.

yes!

please be specific on the thread title

- it helps YOU b/c people are more likely to open the thread and post an answer
- I know many people who just ignore non-specific titles.

I f you don't like reading the threads and responding to them, then don't, I'm sorry that there are a lot of people that need "more" than a little help, for god's sake if you can help them then do it. Just stop winnnnnnning about such trivial crap and let a person post as they feel fit. Believe me if it's a reshased matter they will be told soon enough. Give the guy's a break, they are starting where you once were. Thank God there were people to help you along.

My first porsche was a '59 cab, since then several healy's and now own another porsche a TR-250 and a vette, and of all the forums I am active in this is the best as far as getting knowledge from the true ones that know what is going on, but it eritates me how some feel it is a previledge to pass that along to some that may not know as much. The triumph forums love to share their knowledge, as well as the older vette people, It's a car, let us not exclude people because they my not be familliar with proper adiquite, help them along as best we can.I may not know all the answers but I try to help all the best I can.

I think you miss the point. If the thread title is ambiguous, looking for its content in a subsequent search is very difficult. Thus, valuable insights and information people contribute and share become buried among the Xs and Os of Pelicans hard drives.

What you describe is a sort of dystopian Groundhog's Day where the same information is asked, expecting the same amount of enthusiasm each time. Every person has their own threshold for this, so I'm not going to suggest any rules, but I suspect the quality of the answers one receives is proportional to how the question is phrased.

MHO,
Sherwood

Far too descriptive ... "Hey Wow - Whassat??" maybe?

For me, whatever is in a "check this out" titled thread is forever a mystery unless I'm incredibly bored ... I just don't look, whether it's live or from a search. Clearly enough people do look or it would stop on its own.

Exactly the point. It's along the same line as searching the archives before asking a question. Forums like this can only function because people are willing to help out complete strangers for nothing in return. So why not spend a few seconds of your time and exercise some basic etiquette to make the "helping" part as effortless as possible for them?

The point was missed by a long shot.

Its almost hysterical how a post will start out with a statement or question about a specific problem or situation and sometimes after only 4 or 5 responses to that post someone else will read in and totally NOT get what was originally posted and go off on some other tangent sometimes only to ridicule the original poster for something he wasnt even questioning.

I'm a newbe, and I see it all the time, its gotta be frustratin' as all heck for those that have been here longer.

A title like "hey guys" or "look here" really doesnt help anyone when doing a search. So, if you're gonna reply to a post by saying "do a search, thats what its there for" you oughta be able to do your part and at least make the title to your post "searchable specific" for those that will come along tomorrow or next month or next year and might want to use the search feature before they ask a question.

I do believe that was the original idea behind this post.

Again just my $.02

Well while we are at it then please make sure that everyone uses 4 digit years so we can search easier and for gods sake everyone quit posting just to say subscribed. There is a subscribe button in the tools menu at the top called "thread tools". Everyone should also quit quoting a message with 10 pictures in it only to say I agree. You can remove the pictures from the quote area and save everyone a bunch of time.
Just a note however if you want someone to read your post you have to have a catchy title. Just look at the number of looks and the number of posts for "My baby as new set of big ones" compared to "New headlight install part number ######" Everyone should also use the spell checker. I am very bad about this and to make the point I will not use it for this post.
Sometimes for good or bad the forum is as much an area of expression as it is a pure technical source. I think it would be quite boring if it becomes to sterile. And yes I know there is an OT forum. Can't remember being there in the last 5 years.
One problem with a forum with this much activity is there can be literally hundreds of threads that pop up to any given search. Most people use this forum for a quick answer or a complicated situation. I have sat and read posts for hours to not find anything when asking a question in the forum will generally get you an answer in a matter of minutes. I the search has its place you can get a lot of different opinions. If you just want a quick answer the search is probably not the place to start unless you have taken a speed reading class. Please keep in mind the quick answer may not always be the correct or best answer.
