New oil cooler running hotter than trombone

I was running between 190 to 200 degrees with a trombone oil cooler on my 75 911S. Switched to a brand new carrera style oil cooler, now the car runs a constant 210 degrees under the same driving conditions. Do guys think I need to run an electric fan to bring the tempature back down?

A Carrera cooler should definitely cool things more than a trombone. A fan is there to help when you're stuck in traffic.

I'd want to make sure there isn't an obstruction inside the line or the cooler -- or that the thermostat is opening fully.

I'm with Jack...my old S (factory radiator cooler) ran much (10-15 degrees) cooler on the same roads, same day, as a friend's '73 S that had the trombone cooler.

check the temps at the hard oil lines just before you get to the front cooler. a hand held infared thermometer works just great.

the quick "idiot test" I've used to check to make sure my thermostat is opening, is to feel the lines, in the front fenderwell. check both the feed and return lines, to see if you're getting much of a drop in temp.

if everything else checks out you need the fan in traffic. Does the temp drop on the hwy?

By new Carrera style cooler, do you mean the late 80's style? Has a plastic cover to protect it from rocks & whatnot as well as any cooling air that might be in the wheelwell area. I believe the Carreras got a notch cut out of the front bumper somewhere around the fog lamp / turn signal area to allow some airflow to the radiator cooler.

Thanks guys for all the replies. Both hard lines are hot to the touch. I'm going to try to locate a hand held infrared thermometer to see what the temperature reading is. I'm going to try to figure out how to test the thermostat. Also the car is running a constant 210 degrees at highway speed without any traffic. Once again thanks for all the suggestions

It's an Elephant Racing wide mouth oil cooler with a stone guard and I'm also running an oil cooler air scoop.

Wasn't there an issue with a bad batch of oil coolers? I recall some were missing a baffle between the 'goes-in-ta' and the 'goes-out-ta' fittings. This allowed the oil to take a short cut back to the tank rather then go the long way thru the cooler.

AD911,

A good Carrera cooler is sufficient to cool your engine. If the new cooler is actually hotter now (under similar condition as you said), I'll check the auxiliary thermostat first. It may take some effort to remove the auxiliary thermostat. You could test your auxiliary thermostat in an oil/water bath at 180°F or higher. This test will eliminate any quess work. Then proceed to investigate the new cooler.

When you are experiencing some low or high temperature problem/s, two things come in mind, thermostat and cooler (no liquid coolant in our older 911's). If the thermostat passes the test, then you know what's causing your high temperature. HTH.

Another test would be to put the trombone back on and see what the temps are with the trombone.

If it is a problem with the cooler, call Chuck. He's sold a lot of parts through Pelican and this board. He should fix it.

I believe the missing-baffle problem was with some wide, front-mounted, B&B-type coolers, not the fenderwell ones.

I have the same setup and mine runs at the same 210F. Doesn't sound like a problem to me...as long as it stays in that range.

I thought the missing baffle of three years ago or so was on the Carrera fender coolers. You could shine a light in one port and see it out the other. I think there was a baffle in there, it just didn't seal very well, allowing oil to not be forced through the cooler.
