Craig, the Boxter is going to make more and more sense to us here in Australia with our crap dollar.
I don't know about everyone else, but I just don't have the coin to stretch (justify) ownership of a Porsche much beyond $50k (aussie), so the Boxter is certainly an option if one wants to own a relatively modern Porsche.

I remember (sort of) what Jeremy Clarkson said about the Boxster "when you drive a Boxster instead of a 911 everyone knows your life has not turned out quite as well as you had hoped".
Those guys are really funny. Jeremy is very anti-Porsche but it makes for good entertainment. They are really good cars. Congrats on the purchase. I wonder when they will change the brand of that car to VW?

On the issue of public perception, I would be a tad worried perhaps. As we all know, the typical Australian is of the Crocodile Dundee type. I suppose they will look for the 'Blue Oyster Club' membership decal on the rear bumper.
![]() Seriously, if I had the means I would get a boxster immediately. Brilliant cars.

Congrats Craig! The 987 w/ the new transmission and engine is darn tempting. Too bad my 986 is worth $ so little.

Easy on the old Dr stuff. I have driven my 911 for 20 years. Daily driver. Do all maintence, suspension upgrades. air cond rebuild, exhaust, chips on the way, and all of the projects we have with our cars. Hooked on Pelican. I don't drive it to show off my status, besides my 48 Willy's Jeepster (first car), it's my eternal project. Will probably drive it until my end not its. I am an orthopedic surgeon. Is 54 old? If you think so come windsurfing when it's blowing 25.
Yes, you have crossed over to the dark side, but it's beautiful. Enjoy it. Last edited by glennspiegler; 01-28-2009 at 04:01 PM.. |

Most of the time I am full of it and have no clue what I am talking about, so don't pay any attention to my posts.
I wasn't really serious about the doctor 911 comment. It was kind of a comment to add fuel to the fire about this old school attitude of what is a real Porsche and what isn't. Who knows, who cares... Dude, I will windsurf with you... I rip the Gorge all year long. Later, Craigster Last edited by runfaster; 01-28-2009 at 04:21 PM.. |

looks good....a nice little curl at the back and I like the way the vents give a pulled back style, the front is nice and trim without being to buffy....
Just keep up with the product to make sure the look lasts until the next visit! And if anyone questions your manhood turn on one heel flick your hair and strut away from them! With the list of toys in the garage you could quite easily drive a pink RAV4...and get away with it....! Mark.... |

I'm glad I posted - this thread has provided some amusing responses
It's good to see the support for the Boxster too. As I said, I'm glad to be a well rounded Porsche enthusiast. Love my 911's, but my 968CS has also been fun, and I think the Boxster will be too.I'm heading up to Queensland tomorrow to pick her up and drive back to Sydney. A leisurely 1000km cruise ( 620 miles ) should give me a good feel for the car! Most of it freeway, although there are a couple of twisty bits. A mate is coming for the cruise - I might make him wear a long blonde wig, make-up, and big sunglasses And let me just say that you guys don't know how good you've got it price-wise in the USA. I'm not going to say what I paid, but if you want to check out Aussie prices for cars like this, go to www.drive.com.au and do some searching. It's a frightening comparison.. Cheers,

I struggle with these cars. Yours looks awesome. It seems when they are modified 'right' they are really cool. But I still struggle with 'em.

For years, maybe a decade the Boxter was voted by one of the US car mags as the most fun car built. I always wanted one but kind of thought of them as a girls car like a Miata. Though with the Boxter cup coming on they are starting they seem to be growing some whiskers.
Me, I would look for a good low mileage 993, 993S, or 993RS or streatch for a 996 GT3. |

Just a quick update guys. I picked up the car last week, and we made the 650 mile drive back to Sydney. I gotta say it was a very easy drive, although with the Bilstein HD struts it's a very firm car - you feel every bump.
After my 968CS it's a far more civilised car. Little things like auto window rollup from the key button, good climate control, a proper trip computer showing mileage and fuel usage ( averaged 8.2L per 100kms on the trip ), and power seats and windows. It's also quieter. Compared to my early 911's, it is night and day different. It's far lighter in the controls, but not in a bad way. It subjectively feels like a lighter car overall than even my 2100lb RS replica. It also has huge mechanical grip thanks to the 275's on the rear, and feels really chuckable. It's not as quick as my 911's in a straight line, but the power is adequate to have some fun. I like it. As a daily driver and weekend windy road machine it's perfect for me. I haven't taken it to the track yet, but really that's what my 911's are for. And when I want to go for a short drive and awaken all my senses the 911's are definitely it. Someone mentioned 993's, and having driven them the 987 Boxster feels like a dramatically newer car - like from a different era, and I think that's desirable for daily drive duties. Here's a couple of pics taken on the trip. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cheers,

The new cars are a evolution of mechanics (and computers) that's all..We either will get used to it or be a old fart on a rant.

Dark side? You were already there with the 968CS.
I've done the dark side thing as well and not at all afraid to admit it. It's amazing that the 911 and 928 came from the same manufacturer during the same general timeframe. They couldn't be more different, but I love them both for what they are. I think the current 911 is more like the 928 than the old 911. I guess my 911 was being too reliable, so I needed something to spend my money on... Enjoy the Boxster!!

Georgem park a new 996/997 next to your 928 and compare the size shape. It is pretty amazing to see how similar they are.
It is pretty entertaining when you compare what the 356 crowd had to say about how Porsche ruined their reputation when they came out with the that huge, overweight, slab sided 911. With all of the unnecessary gewgaws, like oil level, oil temp gages, big fat tires what decadence! Ruined our agile little car, RUINED IT I SAY!!!!!
