Have I moved to the dark side?

of Porsche ownership that is!

I am a pretty died in the wool 911 enthusiast, and currently own 3 911's, including the 'aussie IROC' project currently under construction and detailed in my thread. For the past two years I've been driving a 968 ClubSport as my daily driver. The 968CS has served me well, and is a factory lightweight Porsche I could afford and use, but it's getting a bit long in the tooth so I felt it was time to get into something newer.

I'd never paid much attention to 996's as they just don't really work for me. Love the 997, but too much $$$. A 993 is simply too old now - I want a minimal maintenance vehicle as my daily driver, as I have more than enough work in project cars in the garage!

I had paid literally no attention to Boxsters then I spied this...

..and in short I'm buying it. 05 987 Boxster S 6 speed on Bilstein suspension with Champion 19's.

Is this the dark side of Porsche ownership? Should I have bought an 01 996 instead ? (same money) Will I turn into a hairdresser?! And do I have to make sure my girlfriend is always in the passenger seat so as not to have my sexuality questioned?!

Are you kidding me dude, that car is so money.

The modern 911 is dead...Just some old doctors car now, that wankers drive to show off their status.

The Boxster's and Cayman's are where it is at.
Good score.

Looks great! Good move.

(and no, modern 911's aren't dead. Show up at a track day or autocross and you'll see tons of them ripping the place up)

I love the Boxster, I think it's a great car. I like them better than the 996, although in reality, the two cars are almost exactly the same. The Boxster isn't cut from the same cloth as the early 911s, but I think you'll find that it's a tremendous car in a well-balanced package.

Hi Craig,

Yes, you did but I'll talk to you again when you turbo it

And as you probably know Katie moves her 987 around pretty quick even though it is salon-sponsored!

That particular boxster is the real deal. It would run circles around many of the cars owned by members of PP. The only reason it would be poo-poo'd here is because it is water cooled and doesnt say 911 or carrera on it. My SC would have no choice but to pull to the right and let you go by.

Make it black and it approaches 'bad ass' territory.

I went the other way. Sold my Boxster daily driver for an 84 Carrera to drive daily. Two entirely different driving experiences. The Boxster was a blast to drive quickly, but it always felt too smooth - a little numb actually. There is just something about driving the old air-cooled that is indescribable. Additionally, I can do a lot of work myself on the 911, never could find the engine in the Boxster (someone told me one time it had one, I just never saw it!!)

Either way you go, that Boxster is nice and will be a whole lot of fun. Good Luck and enjoy!

I'm just kidding, I'm a big fan of the Boxster. I took a black on black one out back in 2001 and loved the way the car felt. There's one in my future, just not sure if it'll end up in Cayman guise.

In this area of the country, you can buy a nice 996 for just a bit more than a Boxster of the same year model. I have no personal experience, but I would think the maintenance costs would be approximately the same.

I think this is pretty close to my reasoning :-)

My RS Replica has about four oil leaks and is waiting on me to find the time to fit pistons, cams, and fix the leaks. The IROC replica is nearing completion after a year long build, and the 69E has a bunch of little detail stuff to take care of. My fingers are really crossed the Boxster needs nothing but petrol and oil for a couple of years at least!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll update after a month of ownership. I can't ever see me buying a Cayenne, but I'll be a somewhat broader minded Porsche enthusiast I'm sure

For about the same money as the 05 Boxster, I could have bought an 01/02 996. Talking to a number of people, the general consensus seemed to be that the 987 Boxster is a next generation car, more in keeping with a 997. An early 997 however was about double the price.

The 996 vs Boxster debate really had me thinking however. I think it really came down to the 996's just leaving me feeling a bit cold. This particular Boxster made me feel warm

That is a very sharp Boxter.

I also really like this version. Enjoy
