Transmission guru's help!!!

Car is 1980 930 4 speed.
Ok first a little background , at the track last fall, while trying to put my trans. into first, it locked up.,, apparently inadvertently tried to put it into reverse..

Apparently the reverse gear that sits between the main shaft ( 1st and 2nd gear) and the secondary shaft ( 3rd and 4th), popped up and broke the retaining clip and part of the sleeve off. I replaced it , along with the sleeve. Tranny now shifts smoothly but continuously makes a noise that sounds like it's always trying to get into gear. As if you were shifting ( but not forcing) the transmission into gear without pushing in the clutch..
This noise is gear related,, in other words in idle it's on speed,, increases if I try to put it in second gear ,, etc..
I'm beside myself on this as I've had it apart a couple times now..

Hey if there's anyone in N. Cal I'd be happy to bring it with me on one of my trips and we can take a look at it..

Ideas??

Nope, just got a new one from our host and looks exactly like the old one.
I'm thinking somebody ( me!!) might have the reverse plunger in the wrong position ( that would be the one that the reverse fork is attached on the bottom to in the pic). John can you tell me when the trans. is in 1-4 gears , where is the reverse gear and the plunger attached to the fork.. meaning is the fork as it is now and the reverse gear is engaged all the time? or does the middle gear in the pic ( the reverse gear) engage when in reverse ?
