Glad you figured it out.

I really can't imagine going to the trouble of a complete strip of the body, and painting the engine compartment and then trying to reuse a little plastic zip tie that has been in a hot engine compartment for 30 or 40 years.

I presume you are using all new rubber trim pieces and spending a lot on that repaint project. You will never regret having the proper NEW ties back in there.
