Rich, I appreciate the generosity. I can't think of anything I would want that I can't take back on the plane with me, but you never know. Sure, come on back to CO...but then you'll have to make a project out of your SC of course!

Last week I got the word that the fiberglass parts arrived, so I went down on Thursday morning to get an update on the progress at the body shop. The Getty Design pieces are really nice - and fit extremely well. The deck lid went on first, and the gaps are perfect with no tweaking required! The rear bumper fit very nicely also. They put nutserts in the body underneath, for the hidden inboard mounting points. The outer mounting points just aft of the wheel well utilize the existing holes in the fender where the lower quarters mounted. Absolutely no cutting or working of the fiberglass is required!

Unfortunately the brackets for the inside mounting points for the front bumper were still being sourced locally, so I could only see it loose. I can't wait to see it all together. Maybe this week!

So, in the meantime I took advantage of some warm weather this weekend, and repainted my gas tank. After scraping off the old foam tank seal and some other gunk, I used a drill-mounted wire brush wheel to remove some surface rust around the outside of the upper/lower seam. I used some Gunk engine degreaser to get the worst of the grime off, then washed the whole thing with Dawn dish soap. Finally, a wipe down with odorless mineral spirits, automotive primer and two coats of Rustoleum "Light Machine Grey" industrial enamel and she looks like this

Craig, here are a couple pics of Oslo Blue, a 356 color from 1962-63. This is the color I finally decided on....
![]() ![]() However, I'm really thinking seriously about changing to Polo Red instead. I've never really cared for bright red paint, but I'm warming up to it! There was a really nice Polo Red 912 at Dart on Saturday. Here's Polo Red: ![]() Opinions welcome! |

Although the red is nice, the Oslo blue gets my vote.

Dave,
Congrats! Backdating is the ONLY way to fly! I was lucky enough to buy the black backdate pictured above by Dave from TRE. It is an awesome car, and my daily driver. I too opted for repro Sport Seats while backdating my interior. I went the extra step of having seat heaters with hidden switches installed for those chilly early morning drives. There's nothing better than a backdated 911 in my opinion. All the looks and you don't have to worry about ruining it's originality when playing with different ideas that you may or may not eventually settle on. Here are some pics of my car as it sits now. I chose 1971 as the year to loosely base my choices on so that the car wouldn't end up as a hodge-podge. Next on my to-do list is rebuilt gauges for that early look, a replacement dash without vents, and some Heuer Rallye Timers for the dashboard. Nothing but fun every time I see and drive this car. Enjoy, and if you have any questions, I'll also be at the Hershey swap meet, very likely with the car as well. Pics: ![]() Reproduction 917 shift knob, sourced from TRE! ![]() And here's a link to the thread where I describe rebuilding the interior http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21688 Cheers! -Mike |

ibmiked, that is a gorgeous car. Every time I see a black car now, I cringe...too hard to keep clean. Yours doesn't seem to have that problem, though!

Hey porschenut.. nice project/thread..
Oh, and there is no question.. that car will be awsome in the Oslo Blue!! ibmiked: Nice to see that car make it over to this coast! I tried to talk a friend of mine into buying that one, or the nicely done White backdate that was for sale out of Canada, didn't Rich P?

Hey Dave,
In case you're looking there is a set of dash trim on eBay right now for sale. It seems fairly complete, and could save you some money down the line trying to track down all the pieces. Be sure to ask the seller if he has the left-most piece (left of the steering wheel). Best, -Mike EDIT: I just found a seller offering the left piece only if you need it. (Go figure!) Definitely the Oslo blue here as well. I had a polo red 912 and I love the color, but there are too many red Porsches around as it is. That blue will really set yours apart from the crowd, it should be a stunner when finished.

Another update -
Progress has been slow the last 4 weeks, but it's starting to look like something. The body work is mostly done, and the car had a shot of primer put on it to protect the steel. Oslo Blue is the winner! The paint will be a Sikkens base/clear, which will be more durable than the single-stage Glasurit that the car originally came with. I can hardly wait to see what it looks like on the car. I'll get to see it on some scrap metal first just to make certain it's what I want. The plan was to have my black anodized window trim and door glass frames bright anodized, but apparently nobody wants to take the job because I was quoted $1,000 just for the trim alone! Isn't that ridiculous? So, we're locating a donor car from which to do a swap. And now for the latest pics. I wish the bumpers had been on it when I was there. ![]() ![]() |
