I think it's a pretty cool build, and this is coming from (yet another) 911 owner that has removed his stereo in favor of the flat six music. The car itself aside, I think the fact that you did this with you ailing father is the coolest part. Great story and hope you Pop is doing well!

I don't see the rice either, other than the stereo(I'm like JP, a well tunes flat 6 is music and as one who owns a cab can understand why he needs so much juice to hear his tunes. We have what looks like a factory 930 cab, B&B headers, trick susp, many of the same things we have done to our own 911s. If it is a factory turbo cab, he shouldn't have any trouble twisting as that roll bar isn't a chap Autopower that bolts to the floor, but one that mounts to the sills. Rice generall has lots of stickers & a huge pipe, this car is tastefully blacked out, not blingy, oil cooler is even hidden, ricers make sure that you can see theirs.

Plus, anyone whose sig says this.

VWs are a means of transportation, not speed!

beepbeep,
the car will just be seeing mild street use for this summer so the mount reinforcement/strengthening isn't truely required.
the mount issue is more of a problem with older cars in my exp, this is a 88 and has much improved welding around the shock towers
over the older cars. not to say it wont get done, but not until the engine comes out.
Thanks for the heads up.

Billybek,
i'm Canadian so i guess it would be "Zed" to me but it's "Zee" in the states... either works, i'm not picky. it's not like my name is frank and people call me steve!

Crimson ghost,
no hate on VWs, i have a 92 Jetta coupe as my daily/winter beater... although it's far from a beater!

Bonkers,
Rims were the old mans choice. he figured with what they cost,m they should look nice... Personally i would have gone with a Matte black lip with semi gloss black centers. oh well. Cab top is going back on but was left off for the re assembly as it makes it easier to work in the back without it. the Body shop took it off and will be putting it back on when the car goes back for a final polish and Glaze and to fix a couple of patches with light coverage around the door jams.

Myamoto1,
Thanks for the welcome.
like any build some people are going to find things they like or don't like... my boss HATES the fogs but i hated the factory candle powered fogs and wanted better light on the road... these do a amazing job of that... function over form in this case. i don't think the look bad, he certainly does!? to each their own!

Kevin,
Always do! Thanks!

JP911,
Stereo was another old man concession. with the top down at speed, you couldn't hear the old stereo unless it was maxed and then it distorted... i don't mind it, it's a street car but when i'm driving it outside of the city most of the time i listen to the flat6 music like most of you.
Pop's is doing fine, like i said it was a scare but it was sorted out within 6 months without much fuss... but anytime the doc comes in and say.... "It's Cancer!" makes you do a pretty hard reality check and right quick!

Racerbvd,
it's an 88 factory 930 cab.
and like i just said, i often roll without music as a open wastegate Turbo flat6 is definitely a nice soundtrack to listen to when carving up the back roads!

The goal with this car was to do it right and in stages but like any Porsche project the "while we're in there" bug was pretty bad and kept the car off the road all of last year!
Oh and with the seats in, you CANNOT see the wiring for them amps and the big amp and cap are only really noticeable if you're looking at the seats from behind and down.

Thanks again for the comments, keep them coming!

Great car.

The fact that you are doing it with your Dad is priceless.

I like it!

Beautiful car and a great project. Maybe some day my son will want to do a project like this with me. That would be real nice. You are wise and probably lucky to be doing such a project with your Dad.

An 88 cab turbo seems like a excellent platform. I wish my 88 cab was a turbo. Make it the way you want to make it. There is a lot of very good technical advice available on this forum along with the very biased opinions about things that are simply a matter of personal preference. Take the latter with a grain of salt.

Love the seats.

I think a nice touch would be to have the rollbar leather wrapped.

Daniel,
Thanks. it's a pretty fun project to work on with my dad considering he's not really that into cars and basically knows nothing about working on them. What's amazing is how fast he picks things up and how good of an eye for detail he has... might not always get it done the fastest more most efficiently, had to make the top sub box covers 4 times to get it right, but it always works out in the end!
at the same time he probably wont be doing much on the engine/trans but passing me tools and washing parts... you don't get a couple tries in that arena! :P

msterling,
if your son is young enough(13-15y/o) it would be a great way of teaching him pride and value in a car during the build and then you could always give it to him on his 16th or once he gets his license... i plan on doing that with my son one day... doesn't have to be anything amazing or expensive like a P-car, but anything. a little hot rod, a p/u, a little rice burner... whatever!

Ritzblitz,
oh god!? if you knew what i had to go through to get that damn bar powder coated and in the car.... a leather wrap would be the last thing you'd want to do!

My Focus is anything but rice and is probably faster than a lot of the P-cars on here!

What was it you were driving again?
lol, are you just one of the bitter Canucks fans i razzed on dubberz or something?

BAH! Some just cannot respect good honest fabrication and skills. It is usually because they themselves have no basis to understand how hard some things are to actually do... I can appreciate the innovations that the import (Rice is derogatory) crowd does. I can appreciate the art and craftsmanship of the low riders. The work a lot of the chopper customizes do is amazing! The drag guys too... I can respect the blood, sweat, and tears these guys put into their rides... Those things are not my taste, but a little respect to fellow enthusiasts and fabricators is not hard to give.

Focus, Rice? Don't think so, just cannot see that myself.

I think a 911 cab is pointless and as for audio in a 911...

So, it's not my choice of spending my time or my money. So what...

What's been done has been done really well.

I like the bumper, the cooler and the lights though!
As for the suspension bits, they are awesome.

Keep up the good work and enjoy it with your father.

Maybe a cab and audio would be nice...

LOL! I noticed that...does it even fit under the cab top?

Curious to see the finished product.

ZX, outstanding work bro!! That is one really clean front end! I personally like those fogs, as they dont intrude into your RUFesque, minimalist approach.

I dont know what your plans are for the sides, but i like that u have left the valences off, as it gives a very raw, RSRish look to the car. BTW, those powdercoated cup wheels would look sinister on that car.

While its no secret I'm no fan of cabs, THAT one is slick! Not rice at all, IMHO.

Serious question tho, will the top clear the roll bar or is it just an illusion? Looks too high.

Btw, I know you said the engine and tranny are up next but you HAVE to show us the starting point!

Well done! Enjoy this time!

It's rice because the seats have yellow kevlar-carbon fiber and there's too much radio? Whatever. You're being a butthead NineOhOne

The Yellowbird bumpers are NICELY done- look at how well those front signals sit flush with the bumper surface. Excellent fitment of Kinesis wheels (good choice of Falken RT-615 tires), monster front oil cooler, top quality Rebel Racing suspension goods, monster brakes, Wevo shifter, quality rollbar install, trick quickrelease steering wheel, well done turbo setup and monitoring equipment,......... the total amount mods amount to one seriously equipped '88 cabrio!

The only thing i'd suggest, and this is total nitpicking, is an oil cooler screen with larger openings. I suspect that fine mesh is fairly restrictive? But it does exactly what you want- hide the typically unattractive cooler. Setrab finning is not the prettiest of coolers and that's what makes them so tough/durable.

By the way, how do the rear coilovers attach at the top? With the rod end/spherical bearing, how do you secure it atop the shock tower?

berrettafan,
there are lots of very quick Focus' and drivers of them out there. a few of my customers routinely embarrass at a lot high dollar sports cars at DE events all over NA. :P

Geronimo`74 and Doug&julie,
it does sit pretty high, and while i was worried about the top fitting with the rollbar, i was given measurements from DASport and was told they fit SUPER tight to the soft top!. assuming they didn't screw me over on something else, it should be fine!

juicersr,
thanks. the bumper turned out pretty well, it didn't look to good when we were first fitting it as there were some off gaps, common with fiberglass bumpers but the 965 "smile seal" cleaned all the little imperfections up!
the valances will likely go back on simply for a clean look. while the RSR look is nice, it's not what this car is nor trying to be.
and look closer at the powdercoated RH wheels... they are 4-bolt and going on something completely different!
think "wrong wheel drive"!

DonDavis,
the top will clear the bar according to DASport!?
engine is actually in need of a fair amount of work, leaks oil like an Exxon tanker ship!
BUT it's a solid motor... so taking it apart to fix oil leaks will quickly get out of hand on costs and is somewhat of a waste of time as it will be getting something new in a few years anyways. as for what's in it.... stock 3.3L, IA stage2 upgrade, Kolken long neck IC, k27hfs turbo, powerhaus exhaust that has been modified by me to fit the bumper... that's about it.

KTL,
the pick of the suspension parts has weird blue parts. from what i'm told they are RSR Clevis mounts but i have also heard people refer to them as 968 clevis mounts... basically it's a machined piece of AL that attaches to the upper rod end and that then bolts to the upper shock mount making a solid upper mount...
i dunno... it's in and it works.

the car is sitting on the alignment rack right now but we are busy getting ready for a race this weekend so i'm not in a rush to get the car done till next week!

thanks for the comments and suggestion!
