Cool Newbe and a '79 911SC

Whats up guys? I bought a beeeeeeeeeautiful '79 911 SC out of Monterey, CA about a month ago and have been on this site non stop since but have not yet posted a thread. So I figure I would say hello with a few pictures and see what you guys (and gals?) think.

It is a 3.0L with the 915 tranny and 87k miles on it. She purrrrrs like a kitten, except for downshifting into 1st.

The interior is pretty cherry.

So, whatcha think?

-P

Awesome... and DON'T downshift into first while moving - 915's don't like that

Welcome. Very nice car! I want to second the thought on the 915 and 1st gear--had 2 SC's with the 915.

1st is gear you can start in, but downshifting to 1st can be "noisy" and maybe good to avoid that!

Welcome! Santa Cruz is a great place to own a Porsche -- Tim Benson over at Fastlane does great service and maintenance and we've got some of the best drives on Earth right in our backyard. Don't forget to "flash" your lights when you see another Porsche -- it's probably one of us...

Enjoy and keep us posted.

Congrats on the new addition. Those gauges really compliment the cork interior. And the sport seats...wow. Hang onto that stuff because great condition cork parts can be tough to come by...ask me how I know.

Watch out though, it can become a mistress very quickly.

Welcome!!!

Very nice -- congrats!! (Even if I'm partial to '79s.)

Mine is my 2nd with a 915 transmission and I've learned to edge the shifter slightly into 2nd gear before snicking it into 1st gear. Works every time on my downshifts when coming to a stop. (Not that I downshift using engine braking, but i do it just as I'm rolling to a stop because I like to get into 1st in case I need to roll quickly.)

YMMV,
Rod.

There are some interesting things about your car.

The interior is different to most and I couldn't help but notice it has crank windows.
This may have been changed by the PO.

Also.. The seats are the upper spec sports seats. You can tell from the extra bolstering on the back rest.

It's good to see a stock engine compartment. It just needs a bit of a wipe over with a clean rag.

The only thing I would change is the headlights but that's personal preference.

Some people may tell you to remove the front spoiler because you don't have a rear one but I would leave as it is.

Welcome Packy.
I followed the ad for your car here on Pelican.
You've got yourself a special car there.
Sunroof delete, mechanical windows, CA smog package and sport seats. That's the way my car was special ordered.
The makings of a light weight hot rod if you ask me.
Congrats and drive the heck out of it!

Congratulations

Great car that I also saw when it was for sale. Love the sunroof delete. The easiest way to solve the 1st gear issue is to NOT downshift to first while the car is moving. I second that the 915 (or 901) gearboxes do not like that. Unless you have documentation that the gearbox has been rebuilt, you may also have weak synchros, a pretty common issue with these cars.

I'm now on my third SC, having just picked up a clean '79 coupe last Thursday. Great cars and probably the most under appreciated 911 out there right now.
