Distributor Disassembly - Part 2
To remove the distrib. shaft to repair a frozen advance mechanism, do you have to remove the pin just above the drive gear? Going through old threads, I thought I could just remove the c-clip below the felt pad and lift the advance plate off - but even with that c-clip removed nothing is moving.
If indeed the pin must be punched out - how hard can you hit it? ![]() Do I have to drill out the pin? Any help would be great!

No, you don't have to remove the pin at the drive gear. All of the top mechanisms come out the top.
I don't see what year distributor you have, but there are at least two circlips plus a machine screw at the top center of the distributor shaft. When you remove that screw the rest of the rest of the mechanism comes out, including the advance parts. I may not have remembered all of the connectors within the top parts of the dizzy, but for sure you do not have to remove the pin to get at the advance mechanism. |

![]() It's a 2.4E dist. (#231.169.009). I removed one c-clip, and a washer below it. Now it appears as in the pic (hope this works - first pic upload!). I don't see a second c-clip or a machine screw? Good that I don't have to remove the pin though!

This 911SC advance package is what I was referring to:
![]() Notice the threads in the center of the shaft (barely visible), the two slots for circlips, and the fact that the shaft and advance mechanism comes out as a unit. Since you don't have the machine screw in the shaft center, someone else needs to chime in with how you get the advance package loose. Brian |

Distributor close-ups!
Yeah, Brian - I see we've got pretty different distr.'s. Thanks anyway. Anyone else out there with a 70's era distr. having experience with this?

Sorry for the hijack. Can anyone tell me where the part number is stamped on these midyear dizzies? Thanks.

Right on the body of the distributor, about an inch below the cap.

Distributor Disassembly - Part 2
Bumpo!
To summarize: late '73 911 2.4E dist. (231 169 009) with frozen advance plate ![]() I've removed the top c-clip and washer underneath (see pic w/ blue light) I thought I could now lift off advance plate, but it doesn't move. Is this because of the frozen/rust problem, or must I remove the pin at the distr. base (above the gear). I don't want to remove that pin unless necessary! I actually STARTED to remove it (ground down one peened end). But it still won't move when "tapped" with a hammer. I don't want to "tap" too hard and damage the distrib. ![]() Thanks for any help! ![]()
