Stronger G50 CV and axles? Broke mine
Anyone know where to get stronger axles for a G50 on an ‘87 911 that won’t require a small loan?
Busted my passenger side last night “testing” new rear tires during a 2nd gear shift. |

Wow, didn't know this was a weak point on G50s.

It’s not until you’re around triple stock HP.

My 3.6L track car with a 915 has Ford axles spec'd for a Cosworth Escort.
Not sure on G50 fit. Everything on them is just a little bigger, thicker and a bit heavier.

By my calculations, I should be 625.
Referencing another 3.2 dyno’d 260hp with 993 SS cams. 260 x 2.4 (1 bar atmos + 1.4 bar of boost) = 624 HP Don’t have a dyno sheet to prove yet. Last edited by Tippy; 03-12-2024 at 09:10 AM.. |

If you have enough HP to break stock, there are a few companies who build beefier axles for offroad racers. A friend who built a twin turbo SC (maintained the stock look & body) was breaking CVs, upgraded them, then broke axles, upgraded those but was then breaking hubs. It was not a 915 tranny, I found him a 993 6 speed and then the other stuff was breaking. I can ask him where he got the axles if you want.

I seem to recall Juan regarded G50 axles as a fusible link.
Because they were a lot cheaper and more convenient to replace than breaking things inside the transmission. He posted pictures of some twisted into interesting pretzel shapes. Pretty sure that was when he was still actively racing - which would put it before his last build with the 30PSI map that made more than 700HP at the wheels.

Heh. Tried to find the picture Juan posted that I thought I remembered - but found his reply to your question in 2012 first. Bonus footage of broken G50 axles at the drag strip:
