Extra VIN number?

So I had a little time at work and decided to see what I could find out about my VIN w/o shelling out a bunch of money for a COA. I have an '85 TL and have always been "bothered" by the fact that I have factory 16x9 & 16x7 fuchs, but my tire pressure sticker under the engine lid gives pressures for 15" rims. My spare is also a 15". Everything else points to my car being a factory TL - suspension, brakes, etc.

Back to my question... I have an extra number in my VIN. Can someone please shed some light on this for me? Here's my VIN (posting whole thing to show the relative location of the extra number):

WPOAB0918FS1xxxxx

I've checked it several times and also confirmed the same number on the sticker under my hood. I've been on www.elferhelfer.com and see no mention of the extra number, nor have I had any success in finding any posts on PP that mention it.

That's not an "extra" digit - your VIN has 17 digits, as it should. The "8" represents what Porsche calls the "Test Digit."

Just realized elferhelfer does mention it in the "translation" part, but doesn't show it in the VIN ranges section. So what does the "test digit" signify? Is it just a random number or is there some logic behind it?

TIA

Josh,

PM me your complete number and I'll calculate the check digit and confirm the "8" for you.
I don't give out the code.

Best,
Grady
