Post Is this normal?

Hi guys! I just bought 81' 930 and i'm trying to fix all small (hopefully) things. One of them is that oil-temp gauge never moves much than 4-5 mm's (barely over white cube). Gauge gets pegged if i ground the wire. I also changed temp-sensor to get rid of that possibility.

This is approx. what gauge reads when driving and engine is warm:

Thank you!

Well I dont have a turbo but thats where my 81 911SC guage reads too, it gets a little higher when its 100+ degrees outside sounds pretty normal to me.

My '81 930 ran at the same temp as your guage shows. My 78 911SC ran hotter so I thought the guage was not correct. I converted to the temp guage with numbers and it still ran at 180. I even replaced the thermostat (over $200 used) and it made no difference. My conclusion is that the turbo engine with its lower compression and conservative cam and ignition timing just runs cooler. On the street, I can not get it to run much hotter. On a very hot day with the air on and sitting in traffic it will heat up to 220 but as soon as I start moving the temp drops back down. I have a front dam mounted B$B oil cooler.

Thank you very much for your suggestions!

I'm living in sweden and it's still pretty chilly here despite summer coming. And gauge gets a little bit higher when i press it on the motorway so i believe it's not the termostat (>200$ new!!!). Also, when a drive for a few minutes pipes going to front oilcooler are still cold, which implies that termostat hasn't opened and is working properly. Probably just gauge being old & worn

Now if i just could find out where the funny screeching sound from a back is comming from (it's following wheel rotation, but it's not rumbling)...hopefully not the wheel bearing ((

beepbeep,
Good shot of the gauge!
That is exactly where mine sits in Summer (West Coast of Canada).
If I get stuck in some real slow traffic, it might rise about 2 needle widths, cooling off after you start moving again.
