Thanks for everybody's help and excellent advice.

I found other engines. A rebuilt one for $5K and a used one for $3K .
I am not sure where it was rebuilt , I will find out tomorrow.
I am inclined toward getting the used one once I find out how many km it has on it and the result of compression and leakdown test.

What numbers does the serial number should include to indicate that it is a long block 3L engine? I need to make sure before it is shipped from Montreal.

I miss driving the my 911. I am addicted badly. I am already showing some signs of withdrawal! I will start dropping (pun intended) the engine this weekend or next.

I think I just threw-up a little...

I too would love to see a tear-down of whats left. There's got to be some parts worth salvaging and out of morbid curiosity I'd like to see what what else happened.

I'm not sure your budget, but if I was in your position, I'd avoid rushing right into a new engine and instead poll the experts here (of which I'm certainly not one) to try and get a motor with a known history or one that was rebuilt by someone with a solid reputation.

Good luck with the replacement engine.

Once you pull the valve covers, you will be able to see if the nut came from there. The nuts that secure the cam tower to the heads are special oval nuts that deform when tightened and can only be used once. Many of the nuts inside the engine are like that. This is designed exactly to prevent them from getting loose inside and cause catastrophic failure. I wouldn`t be surprised if MM either reused an oval nut, or used a regular nut.

Zorin, sorry to see this, mate. I think your attitude has been admirable. We'd love to see detailed pics, every step of the way, of the disassembly.

I still believe that your rod cap got loose. Nut probably came from rod cap...it might have vibrated loose due to improper torque used to tighten it.

Zorin,
So sorry to see that. Why not give the guys at Nineapart a call. Last time I contacted them they had a low milage 3.2 for 6500 CDN. Good time to upgrade. Just a thought. I really admire how well you are dealing with the busted motor. Good luck.

That is amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. My sympathies Zorin. That is the first time I have ever seen a rod failure do this. It looks like it whacked the oil baffle/case webbing just right to pop out the aluminum case around the oil return tube. Sorry to see that man...Salvage the good parts off of this motor & keep the case as a conversation piece/coffee table.

Is that the rod nut? To me it seems to still be in place. Hard to tell though.

That nut came from the motor next to yours at Motor-sheister. The guy dropped it in there when he spilled his coffee in it....just a guess....

I realize all the MM hatred.. but you guys are making huge assumptions here pretty unfairly I might add. I scientific tear down would be interesting but just a lot of bashing with no basis here so far. that nut could have easily come off after the rod let loose.. not necessarily before.

Why not do something constructive and prove what caused this instead of blaming.. I mean MM is still in business and they have a ton of motors out there.. this could have easily been driver error.. low oil.. wrong oil.. even a over rev could have caused this (though not probable).. also.. is it possible that he did hit something and loss of oil created the rod failure.. I dont see any bluing on the rod so Im guessing not.. but a thought.

anyway.. this would be interesting to prove a few things.. like what about head gaskets?? and here is one.. check those tubes.. are they loose or tight?? They should turn pretty easy.. and wiggle back and forth a little.

Again, I know about the hatred but cmon.. lets look at this a little more logically.. while this sucks for the owner its a great opportunity to learn.. and if he doesnt want to do the tear down Im guessing some guy near him will do it for free..

THEN we can bash MM.. lol.. or not.. who knows?

A nut in the bottom of the pan is a bad thing BUT may not be the cause of this damage. That nut does not look crushed in any way.

When you get the rods out see if they shimmed the bearings with newspaper to snug them up!

I agree, the owner and all of us can probably get some good data on the actual breaking point of JB Weld.
