ALMOST blew my engine.....
So, taking a break from the fires I took a chance to go down to SmelLA to catch a Dodger game. Had four tickets so I invited my Momz and three brothers. Hope to see them extend the win streak and see Manny.....strike one.....
Manny got suspended in the AM, didn't hear about it until it was announced on the radio..... Just about downtown I got off the freeway, and I'm getting low oil pressure...WTF. Pull into the Chevron gas station and get out of the car...... See pic...... ![]() Strike twoo............

So, I blew the bottom oil line from the oil tank. Split a 2 inch crack on top and when I stopped on a bit off a slope, what was left in the tank, left the building.
Did an emergency repair, slip a sleeve over the original line, filled it with oil and got to Phillipe's famous sandwich shop and had dinner.....ball 1 and 2.... Dodgers open the first inning with 6 runs includingg a grand slam....then proceeded to stink it up. Lost 11-8.....we can call that a dropped 3rd strike....made it home with the repair intact. Looking for the oil line now online....

Wow!
Looking at the picture I'd say you ducked a high fast ball to the head! Glad you made it home safely, and I hope SB holds out against the wildfire.

Do these lines split often? I haven't heard this story before.
I'd say you got a walk, not a strike out. |

Didn't appear to be a seam in the line.....when I pull it to replace it, I'll examine it closer.
It was on top, straight back from the clamp off the engine side. It was perpindicular to the clamp. I can only think that maybe it got a little kink and finally let go from the engine drop....but that was 2 years ago.

That's the happiest horrible story I have heard in a while. Time to go check my oil lines for cracks!

The rubber suction hose from the tank to the oil pump is very suseptable to cracking. Due to the environment it lives in (Passing hot oil & being exposed to road debris, water spray from the rear tire, etc.) They are pretty cheap as far as Porsche parts go ~$25 IIRC. Back in my wrench turning days we checked them with every oil change.
What is interesting is they are pretty flexible when you put them on and then within the time frame of 1 oil change they start becoming harder and more brittle. Keep an eye on the ends near the clamps since this is usually where the first signs of cracking start. For $25 bucks, maybe it would be best just to replace the sucker every 2-3 oil changes. MikeZ...glad you caught it in time.

Ah....found it. 1/2 price from local. Had to do a lot of searches as it wouldn't come up easily under the oil lines search....

Nice
Great story, great pics and great fun. Glad it didn't end in catastrophe.
My friend in Montecito was evacuated this morning. Best of luck with the fires... and the car. Bryan |

I just noticed a little oil weeping from one of my oil lines the other day. The line from the front thermo to the tank and the one that goes from the thermo to the engine rub up against each other and one of them has worn a scuff mark in it. New line going in this week.

When I bought my car and got it home; I jacked it up for a closer inspection and found the main big rubber hose on the oil tank was very hard and had some fine cracks in it right where it was clamped at either end. I avoided driving the car until I had replaced that hose and I think I'm very lucky it didn't blow spilling all my oil.

Here's the repair....I'm going to wait on the replacement until the cheaper from Pelican oem item arrives.
![]() I used a curved water hose....lubed the crapola out of it, reminds me of prison, walked it around/over/past the curve and then clamped both ends.....ain't pretty but got me home.
