Alternator belt popped off during DE!!!

Gents, the title says it all...

This was the first DE with my new 3.2l short stroke (only 600mls on it), about 10 mins into one session (about a mile from the pits) my alternator light came on. I backed off and coasted in, the new contitech belt had popped off the pulley.

The alternator pulley was tight and but the belt was quite worn (even though it was new last month).

I replaced the old belt with a new one, crossed everything I had, restarted the engine and drove home. I haven’t checked the compression yet, but the motor seemed fine on the 100 mile drive.

How did it fall off? What should I check?

Thanks, Stu
PS...still a bit worried about the engine!!! (its a 79 3.0SC with 98mm nikisil cylinders and JE pistions).

Don't worry. 911 engines can go a lot farther than that with only oil cooling. There are some amazing stories out there...

Belt maybe was not tensioned enough, pulleys a bit out of alignment... or to many rpm

We had a problem on our 935 throwing belts (shift at 9000) , sometimes it would not throw the belt, it would flip the belt over so the wide part of the vee is jammed in the pulley, then the belt would disintegrate and there would only be a few shreds of rubber and cord when back in the pit...

We just made sure the pulleys were in the same plane, and tensioned the pulley a bit more than normal... problem solved for now...

Two thoughts.

First, it's possible the belt was tensioned too tightly. It should have about 1/2" of deflection.

Second, it sounds like the engine and alternator pulleys may not be in alignment. That could be caused by several things, including the alternator not being properly seated in the housing, the housing not being properly seated on the engine, or an improper spacer between the fan and the alternator. If the pulleys weren't properly aligned, it seems to me that it's more likely the belt would pop-off, as yours did.

HTH. Good luck!
