I wave or flash my lights, i usually get a friendly wave back. oddly i get the "cool car" by many a newer mustang owner...
I also get the Suby STi's jamming up on me then passing by real fast. I know that car is faster than mine, so i just keep on cruising along. |
Did somebody say "MILF"?!?!?!
|
Oh... in my neck of the woods a flash of the headlights means watch out for police ahead.

All set to select #2, and then I read #5. Checked.

Interestingly, I also get the "cool car" from owners of newer Mustang GTs and the like. Also from drivers of older muscle cars.
On a major highway late last year a new Mustang Shelby GT500 and I did a mutual "thumbs up" after passing each other a few times to check each other out. Last year a repro Cobra 427 S/C and I had a raucous "show me what you've got" run down a local franchise freeway. Not racing, but showing each other some performance & sound (fyi, my '87 3.2 has a Dansk 2-out & a Fabspeed premuffler). Bottom line: I'm probably more likely to get a wave from certain non-Porsche-driving "car guys" than I am from a newer 911. And I wave to them, if I like their ride. BTW... Oh yeah, guys driving ricers seem to have a competition / inferiority complex thing. My attitude: this is a PORSCHE - I've got nothing to prove |
Oh please bdisco Victoria Beckham come on man have some taste. she is a skeleton...... Seen far nice soccer moms at my daughters high school
|
Very few 911's in my area and I used to always give a thumbs up or a wave. 9 out of 10 times it was an older (60+) guy and they would not even acknowledge, so I stopped. Pretty lame because when I used to be on 2 wheels pretty much everyone would wave regardless of make, model or age.
I also believe it has a lot to do with it being a status car thing to a lot of older folks in my chosen area of driving. (pretty snooty). Personally, if you are in a 911, I couldn't care if you make $10K or 100K, I will treat you like a car guy until you prove otherwise. |
Driving our Boxster, I was leaving the gym awhile ago and found myself behind another Boxster, waiting to pull out onto the highway. (Even Boxsters are pretty rare in rural New York.) Gave a little "hi there" tap of the horn, she glanced into the rearview mirror and gave me the finger.
I used to wave. Don't anymore. (Can't flash because I have headlight covers.) |
Old guys in new Porsches never wave.
|
I wave to all 911's and cayenne's. Boxsters and caymans......not so much. Not trying to be snooty, just dont like those cars.
|
I've gotten waves from a Boxster and a 996 c4s. Surprising and pleasing, because most drivers in the Washington DC area are so wrapped up in themselves they don't notice other traffic at all, much less what kind of car you're driving.
It reminded me of my S2000 days...back when that car was new, it was a very tight-knit group. I like MILFS...but they're always on the phone. |
I had just gotten my 964, my pre teen daughter insisted we drive over to her girl friends house to show off the new car, as the girls talked threw the passenger window the girls mother came out to say hello, bent over at the waist to greet us thru the window, let me tell you it was not a wave.
I would say it was more of a flash! I did once get a flash from a 993 near Hearst's Castle in ca. and on the road at night by a truck trailering a 911 to WillowSprings. |
I try to get an eye to eye then I wave.. usually they wave right back (like the last two 997's I came across with going in the same direction) but I don't wait for it. Otherwise I just check out the car with as less head effort (unless it's interesting enough... ie. 930 etc).
But as mentioned... it's a typical Jersey thing. |
As a Porsche driver, I feel like I represent the attitude of all Porsche drivers. If I were to act snooty, they would say, "there goes another typical Porsche owner". I think we need to work on changing that. I wave at every Porsche that I pass. I also wave at anyone that cares to wave. Just because the guy passing you drives a 911, 914, 928, Cayenne, Boxster or any other Porsche. Its a PORSCHE. WAVE! I act no different, no matter what vehicle I drive. The car you drive doesn't make you better than anyone else. You may be better off financially, but not a better person.
We need to change the publics preception of the typical Porsche driver. Be nice to other Porsche drives, but more important, just be nice to others. If you show kindness and courtesy, most of the time you will receive it back. |
I always return the wave or a flashing of the lights. A Boxster, Cayman combo recently initiated a wave and flashing. Kinda nice.
Not a whole lot to flash or wave at here in the Springs, I like it that way. we're all a little special and more easily recognized. Not to mention a little more friendly. Karl 88 Targa |
I never wave, because I'm never driving below 110% of the cars capacity!!! WooAHH!!!
OK, not true. I wave all the time, and only get a response from other impact bumper and longhoods. Never got a response from anything 964 or newer. No, I take that back, I had a 996 turbo follow me into a parking lot, it was a 19 year old kid driving his dad's car, and he knew what was worth checking out :) |
I wave to every 911 I see here in Australia. But I have noticed that drivers of new porsches do not wave to anyone. It just is not cool!
|
Not snooty at all 86911cab if you were referring to me. For me safety is number one then if it makes sense waving of course to be worked on (there is no set procedure.. I just mentioned the usual). I cut coupons, only buy clearance items if possible... took on 2nd job to pay for my rebuild... I got nothing to be snooty about.
|
I changed my "waves" to the "peace sign",..now they wonder what "2" things I'm referring to.

I flash the lights. 9/10, I get a wave back from other aircooled pre-993 cars. Lately, I am starting to get some Boxsters instigating the wave, which is good. I rarely make an effort for a 997 because few of them have ever seem to get it.
In an attempt to re-establish the wave/flash, I decided a few weeks ago I am going to flash EVERY air-cooled I saw - I figure I can do my part to revive the flash one car at a time....it might take years. |
