I owe an apology for the "dicks" comment, certainly not everyone who leases a Boxster or rides a HD is a "dick". My lifelong experence has been enthusiasts wave, flash lights or acknowledge each other. I grew up with a father who had Bavarias, a 1953 Mercedes 220A conv, a 1935 Alvis Charleswrth Saloon, all working projects, and was around a community of people who were just into cars and yeah I don't like that that is going away but whatever. I also will say most of my experience on a bike has been that if you are not on a HD they won't wave which is fine by me but it does make you a bit of a dick and I don't acknowledge HDs as much anymore.

I own and Boxster and a 911 and I wave and/or flash every chance I get to all Porsches, regardless of which car I am driving, EXCEPT to Cayenes no matter who is driving it. And while driving the Boxster I seldom get any response from a 9xx.

But I agree, the wave/flash is practically dead.

Talewinds 05-24-2009 02:19 PM

I really think the practice of the wave and which groups do it is geographically specific. Around here nobody's got 911's, so when you see one on the road, it doesn't go unnoticed by almost anyone. As some have mirrored above, my Carrera gets stares and waves like I'm in a perpetual parade.
Anyone who lives in or has been to San Diego knows, you can't look in any direction of the compass and NOT see a Porsche at all times. Why wave?
Conversely, around here again if you rode a Harley, starting this time of year if you were a "waver" you'd have to ride one handed virtually ALL of the time. Frankly their waving is pointless, it's like if everyone in Beijing waved to everyone else for riding a bicycle or a scooter. :)
I can hear them out there as I type at this very moment... a cacophony of blup-blup-blup-blups.

Wave...huh

Going back to the 1970's when I bought my first Porsche, it was never a "wave". It was ALWAYS a "headlight blip". Pull back on the turn signal lever and that's it. As far a motorcycles, sport bikers always "low fived" other sport bikers. HD's are 2 Cadillacs passing in the night.

In NJ, MD, and other states, it is illegal to flash high beams or "blip" headlights.

Probably because it is well know to be a "speed trap ahead" warning to drivers heading in the opposite direction. Ticket & $50 fine for "impeding the work of an officer" or some such nonsense.

Waving is ok. Refer to the list on page one of this thread.

Quite surprising for NJ, one can also get a ticket for "rude hand gestures". And I thought giving someone the finger happened so often in NJ, it's referred to as "giving someone the state bird". :D

i always wave at older air-cooled 911's, and at MILFS'S. (Only if their in a Porsche) ;)

Not snooty at all 86911cab if you were referring to me. For me safety is number one then if it makes sense waving of course to be worked on (there is no set procedure.. I just mentioned the usual). I cut coupons, only buy clearance items if possible... took on 2nd job to pay for my rebuild... I got nothing to be snooty about.

Sorry if you thought I was talking about you. Tha was not my intention.

I would just like to see all Porsche drivers unite.

Older 911's both of us do a "u" turn at the same time to stop and get info for about 3-5 minutes. The double beep beep is the most widely used out here.

I usually initiate a wave at most P-cars especially the air-cooled ones. It's funny everone seems to mention the Boxters no-wave issue. Happened to me the other day when I was driving along I-5 near Seattle. A Boxter was catching up to me (I was in left lane, he and pax were in diamond lane) and as they went by I was going to acknowledge them. But they just crept past me without even a slight glance in my direction. Fuch you then and your stupid Poorsh Boxter!

I had just gotten my 964, my pre teen daughter insisted we drive over to her girl friends house to show off the new car, as the girls talked threw the passenger window the girls mother came out to say hello, bent over at the waist to greet us thru the window, let me tell you it was not a wave.
I would say it was more of a flash!
^ Thats what I'm talkin about.

Take it from an 911 owner who goes back to the early 70's with 911 ownership. The "autobahn" high beam flicker was used as 911's passed each other nose to nose to minimize taking your hands off the wheel to wave. It was the way 911 owners acknowledgement each others uniqueness in owning a 911. Traditionally, the "flicker" was used with 911 owners ONLY as 914, 924 and 928 owners had to raise lights first to respond.
The wave was a taboo...............it started out as STRICTLY a 911 tradition and has faded as new drivers and models enter the arena.

When I drive my 1973.5T down the street I always, "flash" or "flicker" any oncoming 911. I find now that perhaps one out of ten will respond, while a few other's wave back. These folks must think I am telling them they have there "brights on" during the day and often have a puzzled look on their faces!!

Sad indeed....................

I urge all 911 owners, please keep up the old-time tradition of "flashing" or "flickering" as you come across each other. Forget the wave, thats reserved for motorcycles and moms in minivans.

Thanks

From my perspective its a tradition that has faded like Poodle Skirts!!!!!

As a former MGA owner I believe that the 'wave' is a british sports thing steming from the fact that 'Lucas' [the god of darKness] electrical systems made it impossible to flash your headlights! The wave was gesture meaning, 'ooh , you got yours started too!"

Here in Beaverton, Oregon there are a few pre-90’s 911s lurking (I’ve seen about 12). I find it in me to give a nod or wave to them for two reasons, the first is that they are fellow/fellow-et Porsche people and the second is that if your driving a old 911 it isn’t a pretentious thing (like say a much newer car,) it’s a dedication to drive and preserve a thing of beauty.

They, I must infer, are paying through the nose at times just like I do, in time, effort and money just to do so. Therefore it is an acknowledgement of their spirit and positive intent.

So I say just give’em a little love for having the intestinal fortitude to fight the current of plastic cars and the plastic people in them.

Only if you want to risk getting a ticket. Not in all states, but in many. Lucky for Sunroof, it is not against state law in GA, but it is in NJ, MD, FL and many others.

For example, Florida law:
Title XXIII, chapter 316, rule 2397, subsection 7. "Flashing lights are prohibited on vehicles except as a means of indicating a right or left turn, to change lanes, or to indicate that the vehicle is lawfully stopped or disabled upon the highway"

p.s.
(To the old Brit car folks):
Why do the British drink warm beer? Lucas refrigerators.

I try to wave at all, but don't feel to bad if I miss one or two. Always try and return the waves I get and pretty much always do if I see them in time.

bcoats 05-27-2009 11:07 AM

used to high beem flicker to all (except Cayane's), only response was from older 911's, so now only the older cars, was just like when I road sport bikes, used to get the bird from Harley riders, so then only low five to other sport riders. . .

ossiblue 05-27-2009 01:15 PM

I just make it a general rule to flash any MILF whose high beams are showing:D

longhornchris04 05-27-2009 01:59 PM

If its a 911 (a real one), I'll wave. 930, I'll wave. 964, 993... I'll still wave.

356 or a Spyder (I've seen a couple here in Socal), definitly wave.

Anything else... you wave first and I'll gladly wave back. Around here, most of the Boxters, Caymans, etc are leases.
