I waved to a 997 this morning and got a return. A couple weeks ago, I encountered a Boxster and a 997 on one of the highways near my home. This is a pretty rare happening in itself in this neck of the woods. I waved but neither of them did. I also ran across some guy in a 996 recently who was a bit too interested in, well, who knows... He didn't wave.

Now contrasting quite sharply with this area, when I was in Vancouver earlier this spring, people seemed far more cheerful and friendly, offering up waves left and right. I saw a nice 80s Carrera with a couple guys inside. They were passing me when I was making a turn and the passenger was enthusiastically hanging out the window giving me two thumbs up. How's that for friendly enthusiasm?

My point of view is this: It doesn't cost anything and takes next to no effort, so why not wave? Maybe you brighten someone else's day and in the process yours as well if they reciprocate.

If I notice a Porsche driving by (I'm guessing I usually do - they're like eye-magnets to me), and I notice it with enough time to look the driver in the eye, I'll try to give them a nod, or a little wave, or a smile (or all of the above). It doesn't matter what I'm driving, the 996, the Cayman, or the '84 Carrera. I'm enthusiastic about all Porsches.

If I didn't see you in time, then obviously you'll get no response from me. It doesn't mean I'm snooty. It just means I didn't see you.

You said it well Scott. That is how I am too. Sometime I'm too busy driving and didn't notice the car pass me is a Porsche and I would have completely miss you. Air cooled cars are much easier to spot than water cooled. Nevertheless, I wave to all Porsches and even thumb up to all cool cars.

Waving is obsolete. I stopped waving after getting snubbed by various Beetle and Karmann Ghia drivers. I guess the air-cooled connection is a little tough to make at 40 mph. Who needs the silly hierarchical rules? Anyway, I get more waves of appreciation from non-P cars than waves of greeting from P-cars. Fact: this isn't the 60s, Porsches aren't rare anymore, and most people could care less unless you twitter them.

I'm a pretty avid cyclist. Where I live, you can't even get another bikie to acknowledge you, let alone wave, even though you and he are less than 20 ft apart. It's some kind of macho thing, I guess. Sad.

Rural areas countrywide a raised index finger from the hand resting on the wheel is common. Car/gender/wealth no matter. Even if mom is moving kids around at 90mph in N Dakota

A kick is pulling up to an air-cooled VW and giving him a thumb's up. They may jump in excitement of being recognized

I flash or wave at all Porsches. I have since the 80's. I don't expect anything in return. That way I keep my expectations low and am pleasantly surprised when it's returned.

Recently while in Houston, I waved at a guy in an 80's Carrera. I think he laughed. It may have had something to do with the fact I was in a PT Cruiser rental car.

It may have been a nice thank you to a want-to-be enthusiast?

You're probably right. I hadn't thought of that. But I must admit, I had to laugh myself. I waved out of habit not thinking about the car I was in. So the next guy that flashes his Kia Spectra lights at you might just have a mint 930 at home. Ya never know.

Like many, I wave if I make eye contact. If it's a car-guy-car, regardless of make, I wave or give the thumbs-up. If someone doesn't return the sentiment, or chooses a different return gesture, so be it. We can't expect everyone who ends up with a Porsche or other sports car to be a true enthusiast. The good news is, the sourpusses are generally their own worst punishment.

I remember driving my SC home to GA from Saratoga. In Connecticut on Route 95, I got passed by a gorgeous turbo cab like I was standing still (which I was not). He actually slowed down, honked, waved, and gave me a very enthusiastic thumbs-up, which I returned just as enthusiastically. Those experiences are worth ten thousand snubs.

I'm a waver myself, but that's because my flashers are not working. Time to go dig out the thread that details the fix...

My personal policy is that I rarely wave but always try to return the wave regardless of who's giving it and what they're riding or driving. Who knows, the boxster dude might have a nice longhood in his garage and he was just appreciating your ride. Don't be a hater.............wave back!
You must ride a cruiser then... as a sporkbike rider myself, I get waves from every other sportbike but get ignored by most Harley guys.

As for the P-Wave, so far I've only crossed the paths of two other Porsches this spring and got a return smile from an attractive female Boxster driver and a look of confusion from a older gentleman Cayman driver.

I ride and I find that Harley guys only wave to Harley guys and are pretty much the Boxster lease guy (dick) of the motorcycle world.

I was recently at a stop sign, when a guy in a Ford truck, turning onto the street I was on, look straight at me and put his arm out with an enthusiastic thumbs up as he made the turn. I nodded and waved, in return. My daughter actually said, why did he do that? This was a perfect example of preceptions. She of course is used to seeing the car, so to her it's no big deal.

Alot of times I feel like I am in a parade, when returning waves to non-Porsche owners. I am certainly not complaining.

I will flash the lights or wave to any Porsche, though the Cayanne crowd doesn't seem to respond. Maybe they can't see me down here

I don't wave at newer 911s. Why? Where I live, I figure they're more likely the obnoxious yuppie crowd than not. I'M NOT SAYING HAVING A NEWER 911 MEANS YOU'RE A JERK... I'm just saying a lot of jerks around here try to show off with fancy cars. If I saw a Boxster with a Pelican sticker, I'd wave, cuz I'd know the driver was cool.

There are too many materialistic egomaniacs around here who think they impress people by trying to wave money around... I refuse to feed their ego by letting them think I'm impressed.

I have issues. I know this. I've accepted it.

I wave at older 911s.

(Okay, I'm ready to be torn apart now by people who misunderstand what I'm trying to say.)

I kinda agree. With the HD guys waving to other HD bikes, though I wouldn't assume they're dicks. Its just my opinion, but I think that they would prefer to stick to their own. Now, I don't know about the Harley riding dentist, but I suspect he's much like the Boxster/997 leaser.

In my experience, if you wave to them, they'll wave back. If they don't, who really cares?
