85 carrera intake manifold gasket time a little help please?
I will be doing the intake manifold gaskets on my 85 carrera. I am planning to send my injectors out to witch hunter for rebuild. I am going to replace the bakelite spacers on the intake manifold also. The car has 174k on the clock what else should I be replacing while I have the intake manifolds off any suggestions? Oh yeah who is a good source to make the fuel line that goes under the manifold? thanks JL

If you also use the Rennlist Forums, check into the 911 Forum and send a pm to douglas bray - he did an engine compartment fuel line/manifold reseal on his 1988 Carrera. He had a pretty lengthy thread with pics for the project - you might find it helpful. Sorry, I tried to find the thread in order to give you a link, but I can not remember the thread title.

Why would you be replacing the bakelite spacers?

Since you're going to remove the intake manifold you'll have lots of room to replace the oil breather cover gasket and the oil pressure warning switch (both are prone to oil leaks). Regarding the spacers, unless they are very warped, you should be able to reuse them. If they are slightly warped you can use a flat surface and some 150 grit sand paper to sand and level them. You may also want to clean the intake manifold, more then likely you'll find traces of oil reside on the inside.
Good luck, John |

Will the engine be in the car?
If so do you have a plan to clean the intake gaskets off the head?

this has to be one of the worst jobs to do with engine in the car. When i did this, i didn't want to remove the intake studs and those effin intake gaskets were like bonded to the head. Gasket remover was only marginally successful. i would make damn sure i had an intake leak or i would drop the motor...fwiw.

Place rags in the intakes and remember to remove them. As noted, you only need to replace the spacers if they're cracked. Otherwise sand em flat.
Other while-you-are-in-theres include fuel filter replacement, air filter replacement, thoroughly clean, grind and re-install the grounds.

Yea, getting the old gasket material off is a PIA, especially with the engine in the car. You have to 100% successful, or you have big leaks that are worse than when you started.
I was successful but it took a long time and a lot of patience. I found that liberal use of "strip ease" gel paint remover on the baked on gasket material was required to soften them up so they could be scraped off (rags in the intakes as above, remember to remove). I finished it by polishing the cleaned surface with a dremel polishing pad and polishing compound. Looked nice and felt good when done, but it was a hell of a job. Charles |

I replaced the gaskets about 3 years ago when I changed the fuel line and all is well. I did it over a couple of weekends since working on the car was supposed to be fun.
The problem is the fan shroud goes over the intake and you are scraping the gaskets out of a hole. The metal is also very soft. Buy some gasket remover and some conforming safety glasses since your eye will literally be 5 inches from the front intake hole.
