Installing short shift kit and I broke a tab where the guide fork sits in the shifter housing. My dumb ass was trying to put it in upside down.
The broken tab is on the left, you can compare it to the good one on the right. Once putting everything back how bad would it be to leave it as is. After looking at it, the fork won't be able to go anywhere once the springs and plate is back on. I know I should get a new housing (anyone have an extra?) but I was planning on attending a A&D this Saturday. Whadya think? ![]()

Should be okay temporarily - it's the spring-loaded left side of the shifter, so that might not function 100% as normal, but as long as your aware of that and don't shift into reverse! :0

Hey Paul, I wouldn't want to ride along and get spoiled!
Thanks Wayne for chiming in. I put it all back together, took it for a drive (short shift kit is sweet) and it seems it's going to be ok. I will still make it a priority to replace the whole housing. Question though, even though it doesn't look like the guide fork will be able to move from that spot what would happen if the other side of that fork jumps off of that tab and essentially becomes useless? The way everything fits together I don't think it will but would be the worst that could happen if it does?

any way you can drill a hole, tap it, and put a screw into it to make a new tab?

I'm not sure how available those housings are. if you cannot find one, another option is to install the Wevo shifter kit. I did it last year and I think those tabs are not used with the Wevo kit, but I may be wrong, it has been a while since I did the installation. It is not cheap, but in my opinion, the shifting will be much improved over the short shifter you were trying to install, especially with the spring centred shifter.

I gave away my factory short-shift kit after installing the WEVO. It's that much better.

A short shift kit is one of those jobs I still have on my list (only had her four years now!) and sometimes I wonder if it would make that much difference. The shift on my 915 box is not bad at all bar a little noisey going into third from 2nd if I hurry it. Do these kits improve the whole feel of the shift or just shorten the throw?

The short-shift kit doesn't do much--I think it just moves the fulcrum of the shift lever--but a WEVO is another thing entirely. It made the biggest difference per dollar in the driveability of my car. There's a similar upgrade shifter (don't remember the name) that many people think is even better.
In short--no pun--I'd either leave your shifter alone or install one of these full upgrades.

WEVO installation is simple. I don't think it took me more than an hour, as I remember, and I'm a fumbler.

Not going for a WEVO right now. But I will tell you that I am happy with the factory short shift. It tightened things up, requires shorter throws and makes it a little less work shifting. The amount of force to put in gear is slightly increased but less work and the "churning butter" going on. Can't see why I would go back to stock.
I think I will be happy I made the install the more I drive it. I also replaced the rubber accordian boot and plastic knob with a factory black leather boot and a Nardi/Personal black leather knob. I just hope that guide fork doesn't jump ship and holds out until I get a new housing. Jeez, I still can't believe I broke that thing. Grrr.

If you do go with a WEVO or similar upgrade, you'll be thanking yourself for breaking the original housing, and probably wish you had broken it sooner. It's that different, especially when the PSJ is also installed. And installation is about an hour as mentioned above.
