Help Identify this engine
I know, there's a million threads on engine ID numbers, but this one doesn't seem to be in the book, or the type and number don't match up anyway. The engine is a type 930/04 and the ID number is 6462118. To me that reads a 1976 engine but Wayne's 911 engine book doesn't list a 930/04 until 1978....
So what do I have? Any help or insight greatly appreciated... I can say this; it has non Lamba CIS and the casting number by the oil return tubes starts with 930 (don't remember the rest) The engine is currently in a 1981 SC coupe but it's definitely not original to the car. The PO said it was a used '78 3.0 installed sometime in the past by a previous PO. But that doesn't add up with the ID number. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Well, you need to have a star on each end of the ID number so it might be a recase.

Punch one of the CIS runners part #s in the seach engine that will atleast tell you if the CIS is from a 78. Dia. of the fan will give some indication also.
EDIT: 78SC by the numbers Tim

I have a very rare chassis / engine number book from Porsche, and that is what I based my engine number section on. I'm pretty sure it's very, very accurate. That said, there are variations that people have found, and I believe that they probably correspond to replacement engine cases. In this case, I would guess that this was a replacement engine case too.

I tried that with the numbers on #4 runner, got nothing.... I know it's an aluminum 3.0 liter, was just curious what's in it and what it's out of.....
The numbers on #4 runner are 911 110 189 48 (guessing the last two numbers, they're hard to read) The fan is smaller than the one on my '77 2.7. I measured the inside of the housing with a brake drum caliper and got about 8 3/4" (sorry for not doing metric, it's late). The number on top of the fan housing is 930 106 101 0R ![]()

911.110.169.41 is from a '78 (larger) runner, and by the fan being smaller, a 226 and not the 245 is in the 78/79 year range and with the 930/04, I would say '78 is the year. But you never know with the hodge/podge that gets put together sometimes.
