This is inspirational. I'm getting ready to cut out some rust and repair with patches. It looks like you're setting things up for your replacement panel so that you can lap-weld it to the body. Is that right? I've been trying to determine if I should cut patches to butt-weld or lap-weld them. I'm not even sure I'm using the right terms here but hopefully they'll translate.
Great work so far! Regarding color I like all the suggestions. Never has a 964 looked more appealing! :-) |
It really depends on technique and your skills as to whether you butt weld or lap weld, but the classes that the major car collision repair companies teach is to overlap as this way it gives you two areas or different weld locations. (one on each side) But that also depends on where/what part of the cars/how big the piece is/ is is structual, etc. On this piece, I did overlap and welded on both sides on the side and front portion, and the bottom piece was butt welded to the original seam. (really overkill) I drilled out the frame rail channel on the 'new' piece, and then installed the corner piece from the outside, and then rewelded the inner frame rail from the inside, so the original portion of the car was 'sandwhiched' between the 'new' pieces. [ I ] Kinda like that, with the purple being the new piece and the black I in the center the original part. hard to explain..

more.. you can see the where the channel piece will cap over from the inside..

and like a 'tard I got so busy putting everything back together, I didnt get any pictures of the welds, lol.. here are some more in the fitment stages. The used fender on the right was bent down near the front corner., but thats now fixed.

slow down... ;-) I am jealous & can't keep up with ya... man are you making quick progress...
If I may ask a question... did you buy this car w/ or w/o a salvage title and if a salcage title, when you are don fixin' her up, can you register it w/ a normal title = not a fixed salvage car?? Basically, I have been thinking of buying a similar damaged car (read between the lines = so I can afford it) but wondered what would be my options when fixed and if I need to sell it... especially if I had to sell it as a car w/ a salvage title, don't they sell for ~ 1/2 of what a non salvage title car would?? Thanks and keep up the great work... you are edging me closer to find such a car to do a longhood back date to...!! Bob |

I know I said that if you get this car on the road before mine, I'd never talk to you again, but your recent progress prompts me to change the threat to, "If you put 10,000 miles on this car before I get mine on the road, I'm never talking to you again."
Do you sleep? |
I went with white on my rebuild.. Originally it was going to be viper green, then signal orange... then I went for a olive green..haha But in the end I decided to go with grand prix white for a few different reasons.
1. It hides all the inperfections in fiberglass and 2. white will be easier down the road when Im ready to sell. I also went with black wheels cant wait to see the finished project Jay |
Got the wheels and center caps painted and installed and drove it for the first time, just around the parking lot. Towed it over to the alignment shop on Friday.
Should pick it up Monday or Tuesday and then start sanding it for the paint.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248054459.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248054480.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248054492.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248054503.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248054558.jpg |
Really great job! Subscribed!

Final choice on color or did I miss it?
|
I think I am going to go back with white but havent totally decided yet. I still really like the new GT orange, but I'm really not in the mood to do a complete color change because of all the extra work involved!! And it would easily be an additional 2+weeks and alot more $$ with all the weatherstrips, etc..
If it was an early car like my 72, I wouldn't hesitate to go with a bright/unusual color but not so much on this 964 style. Yep, I'm leaning towards white! |
Got it back from the alignment shop this week, so now thats a huge a relief! everything is in spec! :D
Getting it ready for the respray.... Doing all the bolt on parts first.. then will move towards the main body.. The hood had so many rock chips, I think it came off of a rallye car!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248931695.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248931705.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248931717.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248931739.jpg |
Wish I could do that! Subscribed and another vote for white.
