How do I get the engine back in?

Hello again,

There seems to be no way to get the fans shaft into the engine bay so that the bolts from the transmission can fit back into the transmission case... How am I supposed to feed the engine back into the transmission if that dang reflector bar at the back of the engine bay is in the way? The transmission is about half a foot too high to even get the engine back into it...

My brother and I are like two monkeys in there.

awww, man...more notice, and i could have rolled up there!

poke the nose of the tranny thru the hole. the goal is to lift the front into place slightly ahead of everything else. then once that goes in, you will have room. helps that the back end of the car is way up. then the front is closer in place anyways. good luck

You need to lower the back of the tranny so it is at an angle. Watch the transmission shaft in the tunnel (inside the car, in front of back seat) you don't want to lower the rear of the tranny so much that the tranny shaft is pushing up against the top of the tunnel. you could dent the tunnel or worse screw up the tranny shaft. The engine needs to go up at an angle to get the bolts thru the transmission. Once the bolts are thru the tranny you push the engine uphill to secure it in place and then you can raise the engine/tranny up to meet the rear engine mounts. Keep support under the tranny while it is hanging until you can mate the engine to it.

You are doing all this while the shifter coupling is disconnected, otherwise you are going to bend that.

If you left the tranny in the car you had to lower the engine/tans at an angle to get it out. It goes back in the same way.

If it's still in the car, take it out. No use in bending things up as sailchef mentioned. Line it up on the floor bolt it together, raise the engine back up putting the shift into the tunnel and things will line right up.

pull the tranny, line it all up out of the car while on the floor. Then position it all on a small sheet of plywood or such with jack at a balance and lift it all in at once. You will have to remove the half shafts from the hubs and trans outputs..

I think the consensus is to take out the transmission and then lift it up all in one piece . We'll see if my brother and I can manage that...

I pulled my first Porsche engine at 13..... when Dad was out of town on business..

I went through the same thing pulling my engine and found that it was just a whole lot easier to remove the tranny and put them together and put them back in as one. I also found it easier to get the throw out fork back into the throw out bearing while it was out.


otherwise jack rear up so the bumper is even with your waist. Move the engine under the bay and with another jack make the fly wheel end of the engine go up and the spindle end of the transmission go down so that they are almost as if they were sitting on the ground next to each other. I actually used a 2x4 behind the muffler using it for leverage so that I could gently nudge the engine foward into the transmission.

Hope maybe some of this helps..

Oh, By the way, The clutch fork and the angle of the engine in relation to the transmission were the toughest parts for me.. Two floor jacks are a must!!!!

Mike,

That makes sense. I can put a floor jack on the front of the transmission to tilt it down in back. Before I was trying to use a large PVC pipe as leverage... At least I didn't break anything!

One more for just taking the tranny out and attaching it out of the car. I think the 915 in your 84 weighs a little less than the G50 in my '88 but it's still heavy as hell so be careful.

You are a busy soul aren't you, it is easier to pull both the tranny and motor for future reference. It takes me about an hour to pull a motor and from the time I mate up the tranny to the motor to motor in the car and mounts tight is about 45 min. by myself. One note if you spun the motor at all with the tranny separated then you will probably need to put the tranny in gear and spin the axle hub to get the splines to line up again.
