Lightbulb Show me your engines

Hi all, my engine is comming out this weekend for a complete gasket kit. The car has been leaking oil from EVERYWHERE for quite some time. So I'm taking the time to detail the engine and bay. I've noticed that my upper rocker covers are not painted like some I've seen, is this normal on a 69 or can I paint them?

Rather than ask a whole bunch of questions about your respective engine bays, could I get a few of you proud owners to post some pictures of your engine bays for me to get some ideas on? Could you either email them to me, post them on this thread, or post them on Waynes new photo pages?

Thanks everyone

It's a little intimidating (you won't see my dirty old motor there), but the Cambria show had a lost of beautiful engine bays:

I won't show you mine until it's all "done" (detailed), whenever the heck that is...but here's a few disgustingly clean and original concours engine bays:

Tom Chang's 72 911S Targa:

Unknown owner's 89 Carrera 3.2:

And a 2001 996tt -- just doesn't look like a "911" engine bay, does it? I wouldn't kick one out of the garage though...

Thanks Guys this is really helpful. Can anyone tell me what colour early 911 engine bays were, black or body colour? Warren?

I always kind-of liked the Can-Am car's engines ...

If you're gonna dream ... might as well make it BIG, right?

Mine won't be ready for showing until the top-end job is finished later in the year!

Black engine compartment paint may have been an option, but most cars left the factory with body color engine compartments.

I am pretty darn sure they were body color thru at least 71, if not later.

Body colour looks better, IMHO as well.

Most of the concours cars/pics you see have body colour - it is probably the safest bet.

Can you imagine - 20 years from now - doing some do-it-yourself maintenance and repairs on a 'vintage' 996TT??!!

This is the 2.4 I started rebuilding that turned out to be a 2.7 as in the formula Bruce Anderson prescribes. The photos aren't that great, but a lot has gone into this one...more details will be on my website by the weekend...By the way, I painted the engine bay Grand Prix White like the body. The engine goes back in this weekend. Wish me luck.

Hey Early_S_Man,
Count the velocity stacks again on that "Can Am" motor. Porsche never raced a 16 cylinder motor anywhere.

Cheers!

I never said they raced that motor ... but it was fully developed, ready in crates to go to the USA racing teams, and was an 800 hp alternative to the turbocharged Can-Am engines for the 917-10 and 917-30. If you had ever read any of Frere's or Ludvigsen's history books ... the flat 16's are well documented!
