dry ice is our friend

After reading a few posts about dry ice on door dings, I decided togo ahead and try it. I finally figured out where to buy it here. I had heard about this before, but was reluctant to put it on my paint. The recent posts here about it gave me enough confidence to try it. I am sorry, but no pics tonight. I will try to get some tomorrow.

I used it on some typical door dings. The results were not 100% perfect, but definitely made a big difference. I am probably being too timid about how long I am keeping it in place, and will reread the threads here on the list later tonight to make sure I am getting the full effect possible. I see no damage to paint at all, of course, I will probably wake up and wonder where the golf ball chips of paint came from!

I will try to post pics and more details tomorrow...

is this on the exterior of the door?

or did you remove the panel and reach into the door well to the cabin side of the panel?

i did the same on my door
not perfect yet, 't was a combined dent over a larger area and my freezer spray can ran out to early
but it definately works

my biggest problem was the nozzle, it came without
and it's painful to the fingertips if you freeze those instead of your dent...

what happens when the dented area goes into the sun? Will the area go back to the dented state?

nope

the metal wants to be in an undented form
it was pressed that way, and the dent is not how it wants to be

by heating it with a hair dryer, and then quickly cooling it
you first soften the metal, and then put tension on it by cooling it ultra fast... this makes it overcome the dent and return to it's original state...

and it will stay like that till you dent it again...

"soften the metal" !?

I think it has more to do with thermal expansion rates and internal stresses.

Yep, we back when I was working on industrial motors we would use that method to straighten shafts on rotors.

Although I know the method works, I was not able to get it to work on my 924S using dry ice.
We used to do this to suits of armour when they got dented during sparring/battle in the SCA.
But, it involved a torch and ice-water, not a hair dryer and dry ice.

We used a torch as well but the concept of thermal expansion/contraction is the same.

I started one of those threads about dent repair but my results were nil. If anyone can give advice on how to remove dents with heat/cold successfully, I am open to any suggestions.

One technique of the dent puller trade is to glue on a small stud then lightly pull it with a slide hammer. The glue is then removed with a chemical. If you pull it out too far, you simply tap it back down. I have watched a guy do hundreds of dents (hail) on a body panel without 'pushing' out the dents from the back side which is the standard method.

Be careful removing dents on resprayed panels where the adhesion may not be as good as the factory paint.

the ice method i used, also from a video, is not with dry ice
it's with an inverted spray can so you can spray in a very direct and localised area

seems a lot more effective then the dry ice video

Does the Carbon Dioxide method damage the paint. I notice the paint surface on the video is kindda dull.

didn't notice anything on mine...

i think it just looks duller then the panel to the right because it's angled differently in the light

svandamme,
Thanks for responding. On the short movie, the dent seem to be big dent without sharp edges? The kind of dent yuo an pop it out by hand from the inside. Have you ever tried this method on the smaller ding?
Also, where do you by the carbon Dioxide spray can?
Thanks.

my dent had more obvious edges, although still not "sharp"
it still popped out

i used an air can intended for one of those air horn's
just compressed air, but when inverted, you blow the propellant first, and that freezes

mind you, the can is empty reaaaal fat when you do this... i need to get myself another one to finish my dent removal

i don't think it will work on dents that are to small
