BMW Roundel Headers or SSI heat exchanger

Question?
I have a 78 Euro engine that I'm currently rebuilding. I'm going with a 78 CIS and my cams will be regrind to 964 cams, 226 mm fan and ARP studs. I wanted to know which would work better with my proposed setup header or SSI Heat exchanger. This will be a weekend street driven and power if I need it I'm aiming for a total 250 hp. I'll have my compressed bumped up and I'll be using a twin plug.

Thanks in advance

SSI's are a tuned header system and you get heat. If you have the $$$ that is what I would go with.

I've always assumed that SSIs, which I have, _are_ headers, just encased within heat exchangers. In other words, you're not giving up any exhaust-extraction performance by fitting SSIs.

I thought SSIs are headers with an extra layer of metal for the heater ducting. The only reasons not to use them are weight (marginal), the diameter is too small (big-bore motors), or money.

When I rebuilt my '79 SC I upgraded to 9.5 pistons, 964 cams, and SSIs. I think these all compliment each other nicely. As others said, SSIs are headers with heat.

Agreed SSI is the way to go. I've played with B&B, Triad, OBX (twice) and the fitment is hit or miss. The SSI is a highly precise header (yes, it is a header) that fits every time. They're a bit expensive, but it's money well spent IMO.

Also keep in mind the heat benefit of SSI from a different perspective. Yes, they have the provision to supply heat to the cabin. But what that heat exchanger shrouding also does is protect other engine components from the heat of the headers. Parts like the oil lines, shock absorbers, CV joint boots are shielded from heat by the heat exchanger shrouding. Other traditional headers have the exposed pipes radiating a lot of heat toward those aforementioned parts pretty good!

+1 SSI on this config. You don't get any benefit on custom headers on your motor.
