What's this car worth?
Found a '70 911E in excellent condition. All #'s match. Interior in great shape, still has aluminum lids, body is dent and rust free, runs and drives great. Has had meticulous maintenance. Car has 230,000 miles, engine 130,00 since rebuild. Good oil pressure. Uses a quart of Mobil 1 in 1000 miles. He's asking $7900. Is that way out of line?
Thanks' Mark |

That price sounds very reasonable.

I'm no expert, but that sounds a little high unless you are looking for a concourse car. Aswell, unless you have an insatiable craving to own an "E", why not go to an SC? The price point isn't much highter (I got mime in great shape for about $9000 cause the seller was desperate). I'm sure its a beautiful car though.
The thing with porsches is that its hard to determine what a specimin is "worth" because its only worth what you are willing to pay. Some people fall in love with a model and will pay through the nose for it and the name. (check out "The Pre-A Snatchers" in Pannorama) So, if you are desperate for an E take it, if not and you just want a PORSCHE, there are plenty of deals out there. This is what I am thinking after buying my first Porsche. Adam Roseneck |

The "E" was and is a wonderful car, but it is a very high miles car and I would, without question, have the car checked out by a Porsche mechanic. Base the validity of the price on what the mechanic says is wrong with the car and what the repair price will be. The cost, after repairs, might not be worth the total dollars spent.
BTW, early cars using Mobil 1 usually end up with oil leaks due to the sythetic oils ability to wreak havoc on the engine seals. Hope this works out for you. marc |

Thanks to both of you for your help. Not really looking for a car to show, but I do really want to stay in the '69 to '73 year range for my first p-car(I see an SC in my future).
There are lots of T's out there, and a few S's but don't find many E coupes - especially in this shape. I think he is willing to work with me on price, I'm just having trouble coming to terms with the 230K on the chassis and 130K on the engine with the cost of a rebuild. Thanks, Mark |

Interesting about the Mobil 1. If the car checks out with no majors, do you guys think $7K is in line.
Mark He said the leak is usually 2 drips after the car is driven and that it comes from the seam in the case. [This message has been edited by expatriot98 (edited 02-10-2001).] |

Hi Mark,
The price might not be bad, but again, I would have it checked out. If the leak is coming from the case, who knows what else is going on. By the way, the SC's are great cars, but if you get a really good early "E" or "S", you probably won't go to the SC. My early "E" was more fun than my 89 Carrera and it beat the pants off my friends 80SC. Everyone has a different opinion of what they prefer handly wise, so you might very well like the SC better, but I have always gravitated to the lighter, smoother lines of the early cars. Again... only my personal opinion. Marc |
