Washington State emisions ????

Hi all,
My 85 is in pieces right now and my tags are due for a renew. My notice indicated I would have to pass an emissions test to get renewed. However; if I read correctly, Washington State emission testing stops when the vehicle reaches 25 yrs old. Is this correct? If so, I shouldn't have to pass a test when I finally get the car back on the road in about a year or two...should I?

Eric - I should've metioned this to you earlier... I had an '85 4Runner that was off the road for 3 or so years, before I sold it. I let the WADOL know that it was in-operable. However, I did keep minimal insurance on it (something like $5 a month through State Farm). When I sold it, the kid who bought it didn't have any issues getting re-registered, although he was in OR.

25 years is correct, my 82 and 83 SC's went through their last tests in the past few years.

Cali "recently" (i.e. not sure when) changed the emissions laws such that its no longer 25yrs, its any car after '75, and I believe it was retro-active.

Colorado has done something similiar... so I wouldn't be surprised if Washington joined the bandwagon.

I'd still challenge if I were you, at least get in writing that your over 25 car needs emissions testing.

Any 3.2 should pass easily here. Even people without cats have passed WA emissions.
There are some informative threads on the PNW board about emissions.

or just get your car registered out of pierce county (or king county). I know thats tough but most counties in WA state don't have smog testing.

My 83 has a 3.2 transplant, no cat with SSI's and passed easily with the stock chip. Dr. JW had to massage my 3.0 CIS to pass on its last test.

I bought an 85 a couple of months ago, when I was registering it, I was told this was the last year for emissions. Actually, a well maintained car will pass emission without the cat, provided the O2 sensors are still in place.

Just confirming what others have said with a link http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/cars/automotive_pages.htm, your 85 will be exempt after this year, and given how well my 87 passed (with a cat) I would agree you'll more than likely pass without one.

Hi Eric,
As a Washington State emissions specialist, effective 2010 your 85 will no longer need to be tested. Hope that helps.

My '86 has passed twice now with WAY flying colors, not even close to any limits. Also, one guy told me he had never seen a stock gas cap fail to pass.

Thank you all! Now I'll have to start thinking about what to do with the engine and exhaust, LOL

California repealed the "rolling" smog exemption in 2004, almost 5 years ago. OP is in WA, not CA. You're comparing apples to Nazi's.

The stock gas cap on my 944 failed. It's a race car, and has no cat. Just a big header, and 3" pipe leading to a small free-flow muffler so it doesn't bust the track noise limits. After a five-dollar gas cap from the local auto parts store, it passed just fine.

When I ran my '85 for the first time, the guy doing the test remarked how clean it was running. He said that if I went thrugh a long tunnel, the air coming out my pipe would be cleaner than the air going in....
