Help Installing Pertronix-Strange tab on points plate

Hi,

In the picture below, there is a tab at about the 12:00 postion on the plate that the points attach to. It's in the way of installing a new pertronix unit. What is it for? Can I remove it?

Thanks

ran into problems trying to get a pertronix into my car also. If you figure it all out, do a tech article.. Is it going into a 67 S?? If so, what kit number are you using. As i remember, there was no pertronix kit that fit the 67 S dizzy.. Bob

Yes, it's for the '67S. Pertronix said the kit 1866 would work. I guess it's a fairly new one. It's basically the 1844 unit with a different a different sleeve to work with a 6 cylinder engine.

I'll have to resurect my project now... Modify the plate if you don't intend to put points back in the car, but be aware that if the pertronix fails, which they are known to do, you might be stuck without the ability to put points back in the car wihtout that piece there.

Maybe find another plate??? One you can sacrifice. Bob

BTW, what's the chassis number on your car??

It's 308473S.

I didn't take a picture before taking the points off, but I can't see what purpose that tab serves. ..at least for my car.

David,

That tab is only present in the vacuum advance distributors-- it was probably scavenged from a vacuum advance 68 911T. Here is a picture of my '66 '001 distributor, you can see the tab is not present.

I think you can grind it off. I don't use electronic ignition BTW because I can't see when it fails.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to grind the tab off mine and begin looking for an original style plate.

I have had a Pertronix in my 1973.5 for a couple of years and love it. I have a spare set of points and a spare Pertronix in my tool kit I carry in the car. Never had to use them..........Pertronix is an VERY VERY good modification for these points engines.
