There are quit few modern aftermarket systems available for most Porsches - even early cars and I've even seen a 356 with cold a/c.
Other are more informed on this than I - living in Southern California and have the Porsche as a third car, I only drive it when the weather is nice - but I see countless adds for a/c systems in the back of the Porsche magazine Excellence. Good luck.

Here in central Florida I have the same issue with my 72 911. I just open all the windows and I bought one of those seat cushions with the little wooden balls held together with fishing line. That at least keeps you back from sweating.

I've heard of aftermarket a/c, like Rennaire, working well. It just depends on how much $$$ you want to spend. What year is your 911? Some years are easier/cheaper to upgrade than others.

During the summer I do the windows down bit early in the morning. The rest of the time I drive a car with an actual AC.

Every time I allocate the funds to update to something like Rennaire, I come up with another area that needs more attention and talk myself out of the upgrade.

I place my hand out of the window in a scoop to bring cool air in towards my face.

Fans in the car? Well, you can do that. It will be ugly, and your time and money, IMO is better spent getting your AC functioning as it should. I had an old VW westy with a fan mounted on the dash, that used a toggle switch to turn it on and off, it was tied into the vans electrical system. You could modify something like this and have it hidden behind the dash to boost the air flow through your vents if you are the inventive sort. There are battery powered iterations of these fans, too, which would be less intrusive to your car. Put some down by the footwell or under the dash to keep the air moving about. Or you could get one of those funny hats, with a built in fan and wear that!
Or just roll the windows down and drive like hell! ![]() If you don't want to spend your time and money on your existing AC system, then the aftermarket systems probably won't fit your budget either. Go find some temporary, battery powered fans and attach them under your dash or someplace else. At least you can remove them when it cools off. And you could keep a spray bottle of water in the car and "mist" yourself from time to time. LOL! Personally, I just take the top off the targa. And I don't wear black in the sun. Good luck! --- Tom '75 targa |

I just completed a 3400km trip in the '84. Spent 9 to 10 hours in the car each day and I'll tell you that A/C saved my sanity. After about 10 am each day the heat would become unbearable with the windows/sunroof open, reaching peak temps outside of about 33 C (~90F). There's something about the cockpit design of the 911 that turns it into a veritable greenhouse in the sun, even if you're moving. The (factory) A/C, converted to 134a, did a good job of keeping the cabin comfortable.
In my experience, the factory air in the '84 is quite adequate. I don't know how it is in pre-Carrera cars, but it definitely can keep your melon from baking in the sun. My only complaint is that there are only the two centre dash vents (and the puny side defrost vents) that blow cold. I would have liked to see more side and floor venting.

Racers take out the clock and run a fresh air duct to the vacant opening.

Mine is a 84 carrera too
How much are we looking at to fix the a/c? I agree it does feel like a greenhouse, I think its the fixed side windows that stop a lot of breeze coming in |

Drive with the windows down when it's 80 out. Above that, I take the BMW with a modern AC.

Tried driving with windows down but geez that's too much wind draft and wind noise especially over 70...The R12 in my C2 Turbo kept leaking out every year or two so i got fed up,ponied up the money and had the system changed professionally to R134..
I can't wait to pick up the car later today...Mechanic says the A/C will freeze my ass off ![]() Last edited by yasir; 07-23-2009 at 07:36 AM.. |
