Platform for Engine Removal
Having just completed my 915 rebuild. I now plan on installing my "new"transmission.
I'm at work today and bored so I decided to build a platform for my upcoming engine drop. I plan to buy an ATV jack and place this platform on it. Will this work for an SC 3.0 engine. Any changes I should make. I kind of adapted this from previous posts. ![]()

That looks interesting, Matt. Can you provide the dimensions?

Balance is key. Just gotta find that center of gravity so the engine/tranny unit balances on it. With an ATV jack it's so much easier as the weight is distributed on bunks and tipping isn't so much of an issue. Just get it low enough to clear the rear valence/bumper and your home free!

The older SC has a round flat surface under the engine where the oil drain is. Your 83 does not so you need something to keep it steady. Although, when I had a 84, I just used 2 jacks.

My 83 has the flat sump plate, not the newer style like the 3.2. I think it was somewhere mid year they started using those on the 83 SC.

Replace the wood blocks with casters....that way when you lower the atv jack down you can roll around your engine. Thats what I did and it has been great.

After many engine and transmission drops/installs I finally sprung for a "lift table." It is very heavy steel construction with TUV approval and an integrated hydraulic jack. Goes down to ~7" and up to 48."
Now I wish I had done that to begin with. ATV jack with a platform will be helpful but tey arent the most stable when rolling around and that platform should be bolted to the jack.

Lift Table specifications
JohnJL,
Can you post the specifications, or at least model number for your lift table? A picture would be a great help. Sounds like the best plan if it is not possible to raise the car very high. Tom 912e |

Don't waste your time, this is by far the best system... you don't even need to jack up the car...

I use something like this:
![]() A 2'x2' piece of 1" plywood screwed to 4x4s on casters. Just tall enough for my standard 3 ton jack to roll underneath of it.
