Traffic Pro in an older 911?
I'm considering buying a TP for my 79 911; but just found out that it may not be possible to install the GPS...
Has anyone installed one into their SC? What is the big issue?

I installed the JVC 1 DIN GPS/Audio/DVD/Bluetooth/Back Up Camera. Works Perfectly!
Added feature, The GPS antenna can go stealth immediately under the dash where the mono speaker would have been placed.

Installing a Becker Traffic Pro may be difficult as you may need the Amplifier (which I have an extra if you are interested). I was able to install the Becker in my 2000 Boxster. It was almost plug and play, though I did need to run the antennae.
I did install the Blaupunkt Travel Pilot (GPS) in my 1984 944 and then into my 1983 SC. The SC was pretty easy since you already have the electronic speedometer. In my 944 I needed to install the wheel sensor adapter but I am pretty sure the 79 SC had electronic speedometer. I suggest you get the schematics for the Boxster/996 and you may be able to figure out the Becker Traffic Pro Good Luck

Jeffrey:
When they first came out, I put a Traffic Pro in my Mercedes-Benz (someone else paid for it, and I had to have a pro do the installation). I liked it, but Becker has been really lousy about updating the CDs and making them available (and I have a friend at Becker USA/Harman-Kardon). I finally found bootleg updates via the Traffic Pro Forum (google it) but even they are years old. The FM radio is terrific, but there's no MP3 plug, etc. The TP's biggest drawback is that it's a fixed installation, almost impossible to move. If I were doing it all over again, I'd just buy a less expensive Garmin, which can easily be swapped from car to car and can probably be updated with reasonable effort. Frank |

I agree with all of the issues posed, and actually, I have a CDR-220 in my 911; even have the "non 986" faceplate. So it's just plug/play except for the GPS antenna...which I can work through.
There was 1 post stating it needed to hook into the speedo; is that true? WHich pin would it go into? The gentleman had an 86; would my 79 speedo be more/less the same?

Jeffrey:
Can't answer your specific question, but I recall there was a lot of wiring involved in the '95 MB installation, which was why I farmed it out. Becker provided schematics. I think there was a speedo connection, but there were several others; for instance, a lighting connection, so when the headlights are on, the TP dial is illuminated. Some have criticized the TP for having only a very small screen that doesn't display the usual map (only directional arrows, etc.). A screen would be a big improvement, another reason I'd suggest going with a newer design. Frank |

I have no experience with these gadgets but a buddy of mine has GPS, navigation, and satalite weather on his I-phone among many other things...
The thing is amazing... it probably even has a video app with contact info for the best hookers in every city across the USA. |

Yes, that's true. A pal has an IPhone with those apps, and we used it while we drove his 289 Cobra across Wisconsin two weeks ago. Also has a camera (he e-mails photos and videos as he takes them) and all the other IPhone widgets. Will mention IHook to him...
