feasibility/complexity & cost: SC to 911R 911ST
I've read TRE's description of doing a long hood conversion from his great web site.
I'd prefer to not do an RS front splitter....I'd like the 911R 911ST type front splitter. Can the 911R/ST front splitter be used if I end up running a 3.6 with a front oil cooler? Overall with the quality molds these days, how many hours of labour goes into this conversion? Does a total repaint have to be a "body off" to get it right? Can I get it all done for $5K with just painting the extra parts? Can I get it all done for $10K with a full respray?

I am not an expert by any means, but I would say you are more make the $5000 option than the $10000 one. From everything I have seen lately, you would be very close to $10000 for a quality respray without the parts (extra cost for patrt, fitment, prep).
Of course, every sitch is different, and you might be able to find a hungry painter out there willing to deal, just be careful and make sure they know what they are doing. You might want to post this in the Paint and Body section also. Good luck with it!

if you add up the minimal parts needed to do a conversion (tre hood, fenders, front and rear bumper and front turn signals) it costs about $3000 in parts. this is in fiberglass. painting those parts would cost about $2000 roughly. if you do the labor to install them you are looking at $5k total. the only other thing you could do to cut cost is to use the Getty design turn signal fiberglass extensions. they are fiberglass parts that bolt to your stock fenders to replicate longhood fenders. some have used filler over the seam to make it look like one piece. that would save $600 roughly
as for doing a complete paint job, if you are keeping the same color a complete dis-assembly is not needed but popping out the windows is a good idea. changing the color is more difficult because the interior, trunk etc are painted body color so to do it right would mean complete dis-assembly.

Seems like a difficult prospect to go from and SC to a 911R or a 911ST. SC's can be extremely attractive cars when straight and clean. Your paint bucks may be better spent with respraying what you have, and cleaing up the details with new lenses, refreshed trim, etc.
Or, sell the SC, and buy a early car, and convert that. I am in the process of taking a 1966 912 to a 911R (ish) car. With the 'glass bumpers, rust fixes, and paint, I'm in far far more than 10k - in just body work.
