It does not make sense. (dizzy reversed?)

Help, I am getting confused:

- '87 3.2L Engine
- The distributor turns clockwise. (looking from the top)
- The engine turns clockwise. (looking from the back)
- However, when I use a timing gun to check, as I increase the rpm I see that TDC keeps going right (clockwise), which I guess it means retarding. This does not sound right to me, but the engine seems to run and rev well.

Is it possible that this distributor retards timing at higher rpm rather than advancing it? Its part number is 0237 306 001 and I was using it with my 3.0L engine before.

Thanks

Duh, I should read the whole post first. The 911SC distributor runs counter-clockwise. So, yes, you are technically running your distributor backwards if you are running a 3.0 dizzy in a 3.2 motor. 1978-89 911 Turbo runs counter-clockwise as well (see page 190 in my Engine Rebuild Book). All the others run clock-wise.

I don't think you can adapt / use the 911SC distributor on the 3.2 without actually changing the distributor drive gear deep inside the engine. Even then, I'm not sure if the 3.0 gear is compatible with the 3.2 crankshaft.

That distributor # is definitely a CCW dizzy. It is a rare model as it can accept a 3.2 drive gear. However, just because it can use the 3.2 gear does not mean it will work as designed. If a CCW dizzy is run CW, then it will retard instead of advance. You require a 3.2 dizzy converted to use similar internals like the SC. Or you can run a 2.7 dizzy curved with an RS spec(with a 3.2 gear installed). If you like the way it runs now, wait till you fix that particular problem.

Thanks Wayne and Aaron.
So if the distributor is actually reatrding rather than advancing at let's say 5000 RPM, this means cylinder 1 fires way after TDC, which means the engine will not deliver much power or even rev that high easily, right?
So what are my options now? Get a new distributor? Which one?

Best option should be is get a 72 to 77 distributor and a 3 prong CD and wires to match you should be at least running in the right direction.

Shouldn't I get the exact distributor and cap that is meant to be used with 3.2? Do I need to change the CDI?

No, everything is controled by the brain and nothing is adjustable. Dist has no points or adjustment available motronic system.
Carbs, you need better than Zenith carbs and probably need 46 Webers for performance.

If you have a 3.2 dizzy converted to solid state, then no you do not need to change the CD box.

If you use a 2.7, then you would either need a 3 pin CD or upgrade to a MSD-6AL.
