Angry World Championship of Makes decal: Where does it go?

I'm looking for the correct spot to place the decal on my '71 T Targa, but I'm getting conflicting answers from 3 different sources.
  • The 911S Registry website states that it should be placed in the corner of the windshield in front of the passenger.
  • I have 2 books that state it should be placed in the rear side window behind the driver... but one of those same books has a picture of a '71 T Targa with the decal in the front windshield.
Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Dave,

To help elaborate on your quandary:

Here's what my book (The 911 & 912 Porsche, A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity by Dr. B. Johnson) says:

"Commemorative decals were mounted to the inner surface of the right rear quarter window on some 1971 and 1972 cars which declared Porsche World Champion for 1969 through 1970 (through 1971 on 1972 models). On Targas, these were mounted on the right side of the rear window alongside the roll bar."

Aside from being grammatically incorrect, the sentence definitely implies that the right rear window is the correct spot for both coupes and Targas, and it says nothing about windshield placement.

The following screenshot is from the Early 911S Registry website, and seems to contradict the quote from Johnson's book:

I guess I could stand to be a little more specific. The other book I speak of, Original Porsche 911 by Peter Morgan, states:
"The 1971 models also carried a small decal on the driver's side rear side window proclaiming victory in the 1969 and 1970 World Championship of Makes."
Yet, earlier in that same chapter, a caption for a picture of a 1971 T Targa reads:
"Not often seen today is the 'Weltmeister 1969/70' decal in the lower area of the windshield, celebrating the factory's consecutive World Championship of Makes racing titles."

...which raises another challenge:

"...small decal..."

None of the decals I have seen are small. Have you seen a "small decal" for World Championship of Makes?

Judging by the picture in Original Porsche 911, I'd say it's pretty large - maybe a 3" to 4" diameter?

All I have to go on is my old gal in the garage and something the P.O. gave me in a folder of documents. I have the #3 decal on the right rear of my LHD car. Also, the decal is about 4".

More importantly, what would be the best spot to put one of these in a Cayenne or Panamera? I can't seem to find any info on this on the Early S registry or the book written by Peter Morgan...

Are there reproductions of the '72 CanAm Interseries decal available?

Hi,

I have a '71 coupe and have the '69/'70 decal and attached it to the passenger rear quarter window. I also had different sources telling me different things, but felt it looks way better on the rear quarter window.

Just go with what you think looks best!

Anybody got anything on the Panamera / Cayenne location? Anything?

On a related note, where should I put the Pegasis decal on either of these?

Targas do not have a rear side window.
Also the placement of the decal is year specific.
I would place it according the 911S registry instructions.
The Can Am interseries decal is available from the 911S registry thru their web site.

Dave, you have to change your signature now that Linen is no longer in limbo.

I think the 69's and early 70's had them in right corner of windscreen. Later cars in rear quarter. Targas by roll bar
