Car Seat for Kids in the Back Seat

Yes, I know there are a bunch of threads on this - however, none of them show a car seat that's still available. Car seats are like race seats, they have a date of manufacture and an experation date, so anything over 3 years old isn't an option. I won't buy used, so I'm looking for someone that has w/in the last year, installed a new car seat in the back of their 911. Not interested in booster seats, we're talking a full 5 point child's seat.

I've tried the new Britax Marathon and it wasn't even close. The base hung over the rear seat shelf by a good 4 - 6 inches. Most of the bases I see on the newer seats, all seem to be about the same size. What's everyone using?

TIA

I have a recaro como that I was hoping would fit, but it wasn't even close. Our graco fits perfect right now, but it is rear facing and only good until she is one. In a couple of months I'll probably head up to Wal-Mart with a tape measure and hopefully find one that fits.

fiemiller - good point. I'm looking for forward facing. My kids are 3 and 1 and the 1 year old won't be in the car until he's forward facing.

Scott - thanks for the info. My 85 has the bolt hole for the shoulder belt, but not the "clip" that helps hold the retractor in position.

I don't have a model, but I do have a couple tips:

-none are going to fit perfectly - you'll have to find one that comes close, then use some creativity to make it safe.
-take the 911 to wherever you buy car seats and just ask them if you can take a couple floor models out to the car, one at a time, to see which one fits best.
-as was noted, the LATCH hooks won't work on the stock seatbelt locations, because they're too wide and allow too much longitudinal play in the strap. What I did was bolt in a locking clip to the seatbelt hole and use a strap with a ratchet tensioner, routed through the clips and behind the seat back hinges, then tighten really tight.
-Personally I feel you really need to install a centre tether through the parcel shelf. In some places, it might be required by law. (I think it is here) Yes, this involves drilling a hole through the engine firewall and installing the tether through there, and it's a bit of a PITA to feed the tether bolt through and get it tightened, but do-able in about an hour.

Christien - thanks for the advice. I had planned on mounting a tether through the parcel shelf. Do you have a pic of your set-up?

I recently mounted my forward facing carseat in the rear of my 71 Targa. I am not using the bottom seat pad in place. I was able to use the lap belt through the car seat as normal... Im thinking of investing in a Pull to tighten style lap belt as it would hold tighter. The next steps I took were to use the LATCH straps on the seat and attach them to the bottom and top Stock "luggage" strap holders. These worked as perfect points to really pull the seat tightly, as they are Secured below the bottom of the seat to the Body of the car and on the Top Parcel shelf. I of course had to run the LATCH straps i bit differently through the seat to secure it in a Downward position.

My wife was pleased with how tight the seat was held down... and I can now drive my Porsche like a Porsche!

I have a Graco ComfortSport car seat that fits in the back just fine. My 964 has shoulder belts for the rear as well, and I use a tensioner near the buckle to make sure it is nice and tight. I had an older version of the CarGo booster, which uses a 5 point or the seat belt, and it worked very well also.

GotaT or Bill (BSiple) - any chance you could get some shots of how you mounted the seats w/ the tethers, belts, LATCH, etc? Also, do you still have your back seats in? I currently don't have bottoms or backs in, but can put them back in, if that seems to be the better way to go.

Thanks again guys!

There really isn't any special method that I used to install the 5 point car seat. I leave the entire seat in, run the 3 point seat belt through the car seat like normal and then buckle the seat belt in. I then use a Mighty-Tite (pictured) to pull the seat belt tight.

I've been told that the Britax Parkway booster seat is a good fit for 911s. Britax no longer makes them, but new and used ones frequently come up for sale on eBay. I "won" an auction for one last week, waiting for shipment to see how it works in my '70. I'll be installing three-point inertia-reel belts from Peparts as well.

Here is another one. I did have to "massage" the base of the Graco Turbo Booster a little fit down in the opening of the rear seats, but the 5 point fits perfectly.

I have a 'britax/romer prince' seat in my 964 with the stock three point belts.
Exact same seat as the one Porsche sold through their dealers with their logo.

I picked it up used, but in brand new condition.

Works prefectly and he is very secure and comfortable, and as you can see loves "Papa's vroom vroom car" !

I forgot to mention that I am NOT using the Rear part of the seat. I found that my carseat fit much better without and was in the correct position without it.

Many of the guys' cars whose posted have the luxury of a 3point belt whereas in the earlier cars they are only equipped with a Lap belt. .. This is why I had to incorporate the UPPER and LOWER Luggage strap holders to secure the seat.

What year car is yours again?!?

GotaT - I have an '85. I have the mounting bolt hole for the shoulder strap, but not the tab that keeps the reel aligned. I may have to check out Peparts to see if one of theirs will work w/o the tab.

Thanks Netspeed....I think he was shouting "GO!".

Mo is definitely into cars..in fact it was his first word.

Here's another, he's getting used to the 'wind in is hair'.
