SWB suspension upgrade questions
All;
The latest project is officially off the ground. ’66 912 to 911R clone. Intended use will be street (~ 65%) DE (~25%) Track (~ 10%) At this point I’m looking to get more familiar w/ the suspension quirks and available upgrades. After reading for what seems like days ( ) I am somewhat up to speed on the subject at hand. Pretty sure I understand how to DO any upgrade necessary. So at this point I’m looking for feedback re: the options and requirements for doing this coming from the perspective of the SWB platform. My apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, in which case could some kind soul point me over there. I looked high & low, but came up empty. So…in the front; I have the ALU cross member from an SC. I understand that Turbo tie rods are they way to go. Yes? …and the 2 options are to replace the steering rack with a later unit or mod the existing tie rods to accept the Turbo ends. Any Pros or Cons ? I’m hoping the finished product will weigh in at less than 1800# with about 200 ponies out back, therefore I’d like bigger brakes ( ) I have SWB Koni struts with adaptor plates for 3 ½” calipers. the SWB ball joints are more expensive, but they let me keep the existing a-arms. I have a set of mid-year Koni struts which would require changing to ’74 – ’89 a-arms. Bushings for the earlier a-arm may be difficult to source(?) (sidebar... will struts from an ’87 Turbo work ?) …and while we’re on the topic of ball joints, is there anything I need to be aware of there? (something about “wedge” pins ?? various styles of drop link mounts ??) I’m probably looking at 19MM torsion bars. The car is already fitted with what appears to be a stock sway bar. Any suggestions? I think I have a 19MM Weltmeister unit kicking around the garage. Lastly, the 912 hubs may need to be changed out. Did I read somewhere that they are dimensionally differently than 911? A strut brace is on the list. Have I left anything out? At the rear; A couple of aftermarket adjustable spring plates are all I’ve seen. I’ve heard of shortening the stock SC type spring plates. Any experience with this? New bushings are a given. Pros and Cons on what’s available ? Sway bar recommendations? Any other considerations? Looking forward to driving by Spring! Thanks in advance for any input. Cheers Jerry (before) ![]() |
