save or remove id sticker
I need to replace the lock post on the driver side of my car....
Has anyone ever successfully save and or removed the id sticker on the lock post? I was thinking of some clear tape and maybe a heat gun on the back side and a razor? ![]()

That looks difficult if not almost impossible to get of in one piece. Can these be re issued by Porsche? It's worth a phone call. Your idea of clear tape and heat may work but the age of the sticker is working against you. There are solvents available on E Bay. Search "label remover"... (I just did and got some results) It's designed to remove paper labels from computer hard drives etc in one piece. I'm guessing that sticker is a metallised film which means you're going to have problem dissolving the adherent. Try starting at the top. Swab a little on, wait a while and see if you can peel down the top. Once you get it started keep going.... Good luck!

can you replace only the lower section of the lock post? that's what i did in my restoration. of course, you'll have to protect the sticker from the weld heat. try to save it, its original only once. that being said, i made a replacement sticker ( shameless plug), if you damage yours. see here: http://www.early911sregistry.org/forum/showthread.php?t=14828&highlight=vin+sticker

I have to repair to an area just south of the door latch, so working around it would be next to impossible. I'll keep the replacement sticker in mind, but this is one of the dotted cut ones, sure to self destruct if not careful. I could always carefully cut the steel out and rivet it back in place later.

like i said earlier, its only original once. do try to save yours, but you can see a decent replacement exists if you can't. you can see the #"s look a bit off since they were punched with a pin. but its better than no sticker, mine was long gone in an earlier repaint.

Those stickers are designed to come apart with any attempt to remove them.
It's probably not going to work. That repro is fair, but does not look authentic. |

Before you do anything, take some close up pics with a good camera of the sticker so that if it is destroyed, you have some evidence of what was originally there.

I agree with the above. Absolutely go to extreme effort to save the original in original condition.
You cannot remove the decal and preserve its appearance. Save the metal. You may use ice and other to weld close without damage. Be very careful and practice with replacement decals. Anything much above 100C will discolor the decal. There is only one original and that is an irreplaceable original. It adds significant value to your 911. It is too bad many others didn’t take the care. Best, Grady
