Removing engine
Just a quick question. What's a reasonable number of man hours for a workshop to only remove the engine of a 1972 2.4t? I'm about to have the engine removed and just want to make sure I keep the bill of the workshop under control.
Man hours to remove cylinder heads? # Man hours to put the heads back on? Reset valves, timing etc and put the engine back into the car? Thanks, Ed |

First time I dropped an engine was by myself in my garage- About four hours.
Second time was by myself in the garage, about an hour and a half. |

that's a real can of worms you're opening up.
My first question would be...does the shop doing the drop specialize in Porsche, or are they kind of an exotic specialty shop...or worse yet, just some Joe Schmoe Garage? Be prepared for a lot of different answers here, hopefully by some actual Porsche specialists.

I heard of one shop call a dealer and ask: "Does the engine come out the top or bottom".....Dealer sez: Doesn't matter, either way..........
A good shop can drop in an hour........

I agree that R/R engine is somewhere in the 1.0/1.5 hours range.
The heads question...wow, that could become a 20-40 hour job if you find pulled/broken head studs, right? Good luck with that one. ![]()

A porsche shop charges about $400 to drop and install the engine.
