Noise of worn CV joint?
Hello viewer,
I hear a 'grinding' or cranking sound only when I accelerate. So not in idle, not when clutch is disengaged and reving engine or free rolling. It is most noticeable under 2000rpm, because I guess above that the motor will take over ![]() Could this be the CV joint? I have it already quite some time but can't figure out what it is, hence the existence of another thread. Last time a I looked it seems that one CV joint leaks a tiny bit of gearbox oil. regards |

cv joints click and snap. kind of a hollow sounding click, like a horse on pavement.

So independent of whether the clutch is disengaged or not? It will not increase in sound when extra forces are applied like e.g. during acceleration?

I would get under and make sure a CV joint isn’t partially loose. With the bolts backing off, it can make these noises.
If a CV joint comes loose while driving, the axle flailing about can do serious (and expensive) damage. In a ‘worst case’ you could loose control. Best, Grady

Thanks guys. I actually found the problem. The CV 'flang' on the tranny side was not bolded any more. After torching down the big bold right in the middle of it, the sound was reduced dramatically. Still got remaining faint 'version' of the sound, but I heard it is not abnormal.

The CV flange on the tranny side was not bolted, so he torqued down the big bolt in the middle of it...thereby resolving the problem.
