Help getting a SC to pass emissions with SSI's
Have a friend who just picked up an 81 with SSI's in Maryland. Needs a one time visual inspection for emmisions apparently.
Has any one fabbed up an exhaust with ssi's that could utilize a cat and a cheap muffler for a temp. fix as opposed to scrounging up a stock exhaust to put on? Thanks.

Are they that picky on MD?
I just have a visual emissions in NC and it passed with the SSI's.

Supposedly very picky. I think lack of a cat would be glaringly obvious. I guess he could try.

I'm in Pennsylvania. My car is an '81 with SSIs and a two in 1 out muffler. I registered it as a Classic, and have to have a safety inspection, but no emissions test, once a year. We also have an emissions exemption for cars that are driven less than 5k mikes per year.
Your friend should check to see if Maryland has any similar registration classifications and/or emissions exemptions.

I'm the guy in MD living in Gaithersburg. Unfortunately, to title a car from out of state it has to be inspected and the cat is mandatory regardless of classic status or limit to 5000 miles per year even though it will pass emissions tests which are done by a separate facility. So Vincent Hill's plan above of two cats to pass the DC emissions sounds like a most interesting project to me and would be much easier to accomplish than temporarily changing out the entire exhaust system. I have to be inspected and titled by 10 Jan 2010, so will work on this over the next two weeks. For Vincent Hill, if you don't mind I would like to talk with you via phone. My cell is 240-793-7889. It would be cheapest for you to take the SSI and Muffler off the car and call him to bring it in. What ever day you bring it in, that will be the day it is finished! The only questions I have not answered for myself are #1, IS There 7 inches of distance in the outlet pipes on the SSI and #2, is there at least 1.25 inches of clearance between the Outlet Pipe AND the "Heat Exchanger" Cover itself. If there is, then I see NO reason why this will not work. Also he has O2 Bungs he can weld on so no need to buy that. I would Drill the 1/2 inch hole where you want the bung located. Remember, you can mount it from the 9 AM to 3 PM Position and it will work perfectly. I Hope this helps. call me if you need phone numbers. |

I live in Hampstead MD and in the last year registered 2 cars from PA with historic tags and no one even asked to see the car or emissions. They were older, not sure if that makes a difference. Go through a tag and title company.
For my 83 SC 4 years ago I wanted regular plates in case particular MGC police agency gave me an issue for daily driving on historic plates. My 83 SC inspected at a friends dealer and t mechanic didnt look to see if the cat was in place. They were not doing me any favors but they were not exactly trying to make money on the inspection either, which is common in MD. They looked right at the MH pipe and passed it. As for the regular 2 year emission inspections at the stations, once I lowered it to Euro height the one in Westminster takes one look as I am pulling up and waves me to the door for an exemption. They have done this 2 cycles in a row (different inspectors each time) and say they dont want to even try to get it on the rollers. So the moral of that story is the drive to westminster with a lowered call may get you a 2 year exemption. db |

I would go through inspection before doing all that work. Those exchangers are great disguise IMO.
My out of state car passed in NJ with pre-muffler almost 2 years ago. Good luck!
