turn a SC into a RS ?

I'm getting close to completing my 914 GT clone and it has been a fun project. So much fun that I'm wondering what to do next . I have a 1983 911SC no sunroof coupe that has had a full suspension upgrade and lowered. It has 46mm PMO's with SSI's and 2 in 2 out M&K muffler. She runs quite strong. So I'm wondering can I go for a RS look on the SC without doing major body surgery ? The paint is in very good shape and a unique color ( quartz gray ) so I'm thinking a ducktail and RS style front and rear bumpers. So what do you guys think ? Any pics of SC's that have done this ? I'm not looking for a full blown $$$ conversion just a refresh.

You could replace the bumpers with period (narrow body) RSR versions.
Add a duck tail and it would look cool. You could keep the standard 16 inch Fuches and back date them a bit with some custom paint.

This would be the least expensive and easiest to return to stock when/if it comes time to sell.

What about an SC-RS clone? You'd need to add turbo flares to make a faithful replica.

You base car and engine sound good.

I'm sure someone will chime in with some pics. Good luck with the project.

There is a cool lightweight SC in one of the recent excellence issues. Have a look for some inspiration.

I did it last year. No major surgery other than cutting out the panel the reflector mounts to in the rear to allow the older bumper.
I would do it again, but would take more time to gather the parts. It gets expensive when you are close to finishing it and the supply is low on certain parts ie. Turn signal housings. When I needed them there were only a couple of folks selling them. Since I have seen them for 2/3rds what I paid.

Go for it

Here is a picture of the SC that was in excellence magazine. The project is very cool and very involved. I am using this car as inspiration for my own, very involved, project (follow the link in my sig).

I too wanted to get an “RS” look on my short hood (1976 911s). After many, many hours of research I decided to modify the existing parts that came on the car, impact bumpers and all.

I have found that if you want to modify the bumpers/body with off the shelf parts on a ’74-’83 911 you basically have 2 options, IROC clone or full backdate.

Phillip, you had to change out the hood and fenders as well, correct?

Kevin

If it were my car I'd go for an IROC front and rear bumper and a duck tail. Thats how they were shipped over here. This would not require any chassis cutting . I think that the white car in excellence has too much angularity in the bumpers. The originals had a better look + the space for an additional oil cooler.

Actually the IROC cars were wide body....that is what I am doing with my Carrera at the moment. You can do the conversion with either metal flares and 930 fenders or with glass flares and fenders...mine is all metal.

+1

The IROC stuff is lighter which makes you faster everywhere- turning, braking, accelerating, and more fuel efficient!

Click on the threads in my sig. Just got done shooting the last of the major parts. Now gotta put together my shopping list for seals and whatnot.

I tried saving money by using the least expensive 'glass parts I could find, but if I were to do it over again I would spend a bit more for higher quality parts from Getty or MA Shaw.

Also, I had to do a bit of rust repair as well as using 4 different fenders to create 2 usable ones.

The rear is easy, must a little trimming to fit an RS rear bumper.

The front can be done one of two ways.

Metal: you can graft the sheet metal from the front of and earlier car and use a stock long hood and fenders.

Fiber Glass: There is a conversion long hood made with the latch mechanism moved to work with the post 73 impact cars. As to the front fenders, you can get a FG extension pieces to go on your impact bumper fenders or just go with total fiberglass early fenders.

I think IROC front and rear bumpers/valance that will fit my SC flares is the way to go. I'm not going to do major surgery I did that on my 914 and I'm not doing that to my 911. Add a ducktail and remove the rockers and I'll have the look I'm after and it will save some weight. I'll move my fender mounted oil cooler to the front for better air flow. Other than that maybe play with the mirrors and be done. Thanks guys.

Fleiger's car is a great example of the IROC , 3.0 rs look I think it's cleaner and makes more sense than converting back to a long hood although the long hood is still my favorite.

Anyone know what brand of front bumper/valance is on the car in the pic that Flieger posted ? That looks very nice.

our rear bumper, but we made a new mold since that part was sold years ago. The front is an AIR part that we also sell, but it will need some fitting work to line up properly.

contact me at tremotorsports@gmail.com for details
thanks

Nice looking car Larry!
I could have done my car in half the time if I had done mine that way. I just may do it to my Carrera.......

Thanks, this is just what I picture when I hear RS as it pertains to a short hood. Mine was intended to be an IROC/RSish (74 RS ...) car

I think this car is dead nuts cool!

It's very hard to come up with something new that hasn't been done to death.

Dave I won't be doing this project until sometime next year as my 914 is not done yet. But you have a great reputation on this forum and I will contact you when I'm ready. Thanks
