Selling a 72 Porsche manual and I need some advice about a question I recieved

I am selling a 1972 Porsche 911T manual on the parts for sale forum. I received a request from a Pelican patron. They wanted to know if I would copy the pages of my manual and sell them just the copied images. My question is, is this right? I am reluctant to do such a thing because I don't know if it is right to do? If anyone can give me insight to this I would really appreciate it. Thank You

No. The manuals are copyrighted and the copyright is owned (I think) by Porsche AG. Just let him buy your original manual.

That said, what manual?
Is it a ‘Driver’s Manual”, a ‘Workshop Manual’, a paper ‘Parts Manual’ or other? There is a wide spread in value depending on what it is and how complete. I can advise.

They want a copy of the drivers manual. I think the best thing to do is what you mentioned and that is just ask the patron to purchase the original manual package.

Just copy the darn thing and charge him for your time. A copyright on a 38-year-old manual? Come on. I copy every old manual I can find for my vintage recording studio gear, and keep an "eFile" on all of it. Printed them out countless times for people. Just copy the thing. Seems like the world's a little too uptight sometimes...

i don't think he is being uptight? it just looks like he wants to do the right thing, just because a movie is 38 years old i think you may get in trouble for copying it and selling it on the Internet. i would think if they are not sold new any longer then you are less likely to be infringing on a current copyright and would be ok to sell but im not sure

Heck the requester has a '72 and wants a copy of owners manual to see what Porsche provided the original owners. Think from his perspective Help the guy out. I sure as heck would bundle the owner manual along with the car if I sold my 72 911T to another person. If you will not copy the manual for the fellow, I will.

since i have rec'd hundreds of emails asking me to render an opinion on the maint. records (both completed and blank) i would like to suggest the following:

The completed maintenance record should only be sold/given (depends on how you feel about karma) to the owner of the car it belongs to.

Any blank maintenance record (seems to be one there) should be either put in a safe or destroyed. Leaving these things out and about is, imho, tantamount to leaving a loaded pistol on the corner of MLK and some other random street in anytown USA. Huge potential for wrongdoing.

I am the current owner of the car as well. One 1972 Porsche 911 T however I am selling the manual package that came with it. Does this still mean I should just hang on to the maintinence records? And yes I like having good karma so I would like to do the right thing

I don't know your situation or why your are selling, but I would keep all the orginal manuals and records since they are original to your car. It is nice to have all the original 'stuff' when a new owner takes over.
I got the original records, manuals and window sticker when I bought my 77 in 1998, and I really appreciated that they were not lost or sold.

Correction, this car was a 1972 slant conversion that I parted earlier this year. This car was junk and has been quartered and the nose replaced at one point in its life. I had a Porsche enthusiest look at this and was told it was too far gone to bring back to an original car. I have gotten rid of the chassis and I have these manuals left over from that car. So these have no real home except to be in a different car. I hope this clarifies to my questions

In Andrew's defense I'm the individual who asked for a copy of the manual. Currently I am working on restoring and upgrading my 72T. I asked to pay for a copy of the manual so I could confirm things that are difficult to find in the tech manuals for a 72. Such as fuses, and heaters controls because my car is not labeled. Basically just to find out more about the car. Its hard to justify a 100 -200$ investment in a owners manual when the car needs work. The manual is his, so its his right to make the choice whether to copy it or not. My view was just to learn alittle more and make trouble shooting a little easier. So if anyone has a 40+ year old manual that they would like to share.... Pls drop me a note. Thx

he's not saying sell a copy and i doubt anyone would try to copy ,print and bind it ....

It is not illegal for me to copy something I own for my own use and if a friend of mine (It would be nice if we all considered every one here friends) asked me for a copy of it I would let it go .... If your talking a 40 year old 20 page manual if you photo copied it for the guy I doubt if he is going to try to sell it off to someone else as a "original" factory fresh manual

i think akporsche was just unsure, i my self would have no problem copying and giving to someone, and im sure akporsche will probably do what he feels best at this point.

Well, in this regard, I'm looking for a pdf or other electronic file of a '75 driver's manual for a targa. This is to learn more about my car, as some of the switches on the dash are incorrect (two defrost switches???) and I'm also interested in what the owner's manual said about the vehicle. If anyone has one they'd like to share with me, let me know. Obviously this is for my own education, to learn more about my car, not for resale, etc.

Indeed Porsche itself (or is that VW now?) Should have pdf's of owners manuals online for free.
