ATTN: Atlanta area Pelicans, found local source for Brad Penn oil.

Yesterday I purchased two cases of Brad Penn 20W/50W oil for my up coming oil change. Good price, $44.78 plus tax per case of 12qt. If you've been looking for Brad Penn oil , it's in Lilburn. They keep it in stock.

Brad Penn Oil?

I do not want to stir up controversy, but what is so special about Brad Penn Oil?

I have had four Porsches over the course of 30 years and I have used Valvoline Turbo V 20-50W forever! I never had any issues with the oil in any car at any time of year.

Please let me know if I am missing something here......."you built a better mousetrap and the world......................"

Thanks

Bob,
A lot has changed in oil formulations in the past couple of years. The old SH and SL formulations have been changed to SM. The change basically cut in half the amount of a wear inhibitor called ZDDP, mainly to lessen damage to the newest style of cat converters. The downside to this is flat tappet motors suffer much worse cam, tappet follower, and lifter wear with the lower ZDDP levels. There is no problem with newer style motors with roller cams etc. The basic rule these days is don't use a SM rated oil or a CJ rated diesel oil in your older 911.
Valvoline no longer offers the oil you mentioned. The only Valvoline products with adequate ZDDP are their racing oils. Racing oil is great, but has a greatly reduced amount of detergent, which means more frequent oil changes. Recommended interval = 1500-3000 miles.
This dilemma has become a huge topic of interest on most older high performance car forums, including this one! Go to this thread and the first page is a synopis of the gist of the thread, which is a zillion pages long.
Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils

A large percentage of folks on this forum have settled on Brad Penn oil to address these concerns, as many used oil analysis results have indicated it is an excellent product. Charles Navarro is kind of an oil guru, and is mentioned in the above thread along with his website addy. He has done a huge amount of work on these oil concerns. Check it out if you have some time to read!

Grant,

The SM rules do not apply to 20w50 oils. There are a dozen 20w50 oils with SM stamped on the bottles that have proven to have enough wear protectors. I personally use Kendall GT as do other experts like Peter Zimmerman.

Brad penn is 99% Hype... Oh well.... You cant even get it in Houston... the 4th largest city in the US and Oil capital of the world. The company sent me to Oklahoma City. LOL are you kidding me?

Its a charged topic for sure...

Just my .02.

Brad,
You spends yo money and makes yo choices! As far as not being available in Texas, could it be because it's a smaller company Pennsylvania product. Pennsylvania oil crude stocks are well known as the "gold standard" in the industry. Yes Kendall is also a Pa. product, but a much larger company. Brad Penn is a spinoff of Kendall's high performance oil group, which was sold to Brad Penn. So if it's hype, it's hype of Kendall's former high performance "Green Oil" product!

UPDATE: Brad,
I was wrong, Kendall brand is now owned by Conoco/Phillips, based in Houston. They did however sell their hi po "Green Oil" product line to Brad Penn in Bradley, Pa. The old home of Kendall.
You are correct on the Kendall GT 1 20W50 dino oil. It is the only one on their product list that claims added ZDDP for high performance engines, and is an SM rated oil. If you like it, and have had good results, continue to use it by all means. This oil controversy is as you said "a charged topic for sure", kind of like the old "I like Ford vs I like Chevy" arguments!

I know lot of local Pcar folks have now started buying their Brad Penn at Davis Oil. Ought to ask them for a referral fee, or perhaps a complimentary quart of oil! LOL!
Actually, I'm just pleased that someone carries Brad Penn locally, as oppossed to having to pay for shipping, like a lot of people on this forum have to do.
