Carrera tail

Here is a pic of my July 74 built Carrera #19.
The tail was installed at the factory, I visited the Museum a month ago and Turbo#1
has the same tail with Carrera emblem. Built the same month as my car.

See pics.

Have you checked to see if your tail has a part number? Also, see if the base is metal or fiberglass.

The tail with the secondary grill first appeared on preproduction 1975 Turbos in Sep 1974.

Here's '75 Carrera chassis #9115400012 that sold on BAT that has a very early whale tail without a secondary grill.

Love the color of your car.

My mistake. It does have a rubber lip.

Hello,

What exactly do you want to see ?

The rubber is perfectly mounted to the base. At this moment all studs are fine, no broken studs. Honestly I am not going to try to loosen them. Allthough they are not rusted as far as I can see, breaking the studs is not a risk I am going to take.....
There are 4 studs at the back and one at each side left and right.

Best regards
Kristof

Here’s a 964 turboS Lightwieght rear .
Porsche Motorsport part , carbon kevlar iirc .
Also seen on some ruf cars .
No , I’m not fitting an escort cosworth type wing on my 73 !!!
It’s just a good place to store it until it goes back to the paintshop...

Don't take them off. From the pictures on your ad. They look kind of like screws instead of studs

I'll have a look at it tomorow and try to take some extra pics.

kristof 08-26-2020 11:27 PM

Hello, you are correct, the rubber is bolted to the frame with 5 screws and one original stud. Must say the rubber fits perfectly and feels tightly fixed. They also seem to have used the original holes in the frame, I see no extra holes. I cant tell how they modified it to fix it properly with screws but it seems profesionaly done.

Where did you come by this tail? Is it factory or aftermarket? I had a factory 94 turbo S tail which was considerably larger and made of fiberglass. Many I know have been looking for good reproductions of the TSL tail but usually only glass or CF versions of the 3.2 carrera/964 RSA tail can be found. The TSL tail is larger.

Does this have the shrouds for the intercooler as well? The factory 94 tail had no part number but a fiberglass resin blob with an OE equipment triangle impression on the inside along the backside. All I can say is that the TurboS tail sold for as much as an entire 964 donor car I picked up back in 2014.

Let me look at a rubber I have to make sure of the original configuration.

Anthony ,
I think we might have spoken about your spoiler many years ago ?
My memory is not very good these days , but iirc ...
You had the 965 turbo S rear .
This was a ‘tea tray” type spoiler like a normal 965 , and bolts to a normal 965 lid .
Made of fibreglass , and due to shape of inlet area could not use the normal 2-piece grill .
The 965 turbo S lightwieght rear is a “whale-tail” type spoiler Like a normal Carrera , and bolts to a normal 965 lid .
Made of carbon Kevlar , and due to shape of inlet area Can Use the normal 2-piece grill .
( there is a strip of aluminium on inside for fixing to )

Mine is getting ready to go back for its 4th painting (had my uk car painted twice as first finish unacceptable to me , And had this redone ready to go on my USA car but needs redoing due to “storage problems” )
so I’ll look into cleaning it right down and snap some good pics .

I think cargraphic made them for porsche Motorsport/special wishes , so it might be worth contacting them to see if the have one ?
If not , porsche Motorsport or ruf .
Morris made some Kevlar parts For pms too , so maybe try them .
Ruf still use it , or a version of it , so they’d probably be the best bet Allthough I think they’re now using a carbon version and not carbon/Kevlar ..

I cannot remember exactly where I bought it .
I just looked at the intercooler ducting and it came from Mann island porsche in liverpool , and they where my contact to porsche Motorsport department , so I’m guessing it came from factory . ( I was installing 9.5” speedlines super-cup wheels at the time that where a Motorsport only part)
Mann island was quite a distance for me especially considering I had other dealers much closer to home , so I would not use them just for “normal” parts ...
To give an idea How long it has been , back then certain dealers could “speak” with the Motorsport department via fax :D
Normally a couple of days after Mann island sent the fax I’d get a phone call from them that allways seemed to start with “are you sitting down ?”
I want to say it cost me around 5000 uk pounds to get this on my car back then In the late 90s .
It certainly was not cheap !! :D
And Mann island shut down around 2000/2001 .

EDIT : it might Even have come from steve strange as I just recollected he parted out a car once .
Though I think I only bought the lower dash from him .

Pics of black car below for reference of grill fixings etc came from silverstone auctions lightwieght , silver car showing x93 single piece grill is From road scholars turboS slantnose , last pic is the sticker from Mann island liverpool on my shroud (which I installed but didn’t Actually need as I never ended up converting to turbo)

The weave is bigger than used on the hoods .
See pics below .
Photo with blue Kevlar by DuPont sticker showing is a hood .

EDIT :
Iirc Morris made the Kevlar hoods for porsche and ruf , and with the weave being different to the hood I suspect they will not be much use to approach .

EDIT AGAIN :
I just had a quick look and it seems the smaller weave is used in certain areas as well as the larger one , so maybe it is worthwhile to approach Morris .
I was looking for a resin blob like you describe , but do not see anything .
Do you have photos of this you can post ?

^^ very nice and rare piece. Thanks for sharing. I had not seen a TSL tail before. Interestingly the part number you have is noted is for the air shroud I had no idea what that number was but apparently is still available. AFAIK the 94 tail needed a taller shroud for the taller wing I am assuming your is the same or that the TSL tail uses the factory part vs the 94 TS.

The tail I was referring to was the 1994 965 turbo S tail. It was slightly larger and made of FG.

Here are some pictures of it. AFAIK mine was the last of this type of tail in existence in its original gel coat. I much prefer yours.
